Job Profile
The company is looking for a Maintenance Mechanic who will contribute to Sterling Steel safely producing high-quality products at the lowest cost by repairing machines and structures throughout the plant, fabricating or installing mechanical items when necessary, and completing scheduled maintenance to prevent future failures.
Education Level
- Not mentioned, a High School Diploma (a plus)
Work Experience
- 3+ years of maintenance mechanic-related experience; preferably in a similar heavy manufacturing setting
Duties/Responsibilities
- Accurately report and record equipment history data for the CMMS system
- Adhere to all Policies and Work Rules
- Advise when immediate shutdown of equipment is necessary to minimize damage or when temporarily continued operation will have no harmful effect
- Analyze and interpret data, recommend adjustments or corrections where required
- Calibrate or operate various diagnostic instruments to collect/analyze/interpret equipment operational data
- Carry out the Supervisors’ orders in connection with operating practice, effective performance, etc.
- Communicate and coordinate with employees, supervisors, and managers
- Communicate with Crane Operators using standard crane signals
- Complete paper copy of work orders
- Comply with all SSC Safety rules, including Lock Out/Tag Out compliance
- Create hand sketches, when necessary, of machine parts, showing shape and dimension
- Determine the best way to make repairs to minimize the interruption of production
- Develop and perform equipment inspection routes; collect and document findings
- Dismantle, repair, and assemble mechanical equipment such as gears, bearings (Babbitt and scrape bearings), shafts, cables, belts, etc.
- Follow all related SJPs
- Inspect mechanical equipment for operating conditions and determine the need for maintenance or repair. Troubleshoots and determines the course of repairs required
- Maintain daily activity logs, maintenance records concerning the assigned service vehicle and equipment
- Operate oxy-acetylene torch or electric welder on a variety of construction or repair welds
- Operate power tools such as electric and pneumatic drills, grinders, power saws, etc.
- Operate remote-controlled cranes and mobile equipment
- Perform equipment failure analysis and recommend potential corrective actions
- Perform housekeeping in areas of repair work and shops
- Plan work on the job alone and with other mechanics
- Prepare analyses and reports, and record data
- Provide direction to production employees when they are assisting with Mechanical tasks
- Read and interpret assembly drawings when necessary
- Receive and review the schedule of equipment to be diagnosed or inspected
- Report to work as scheduled
- Complete all other duties as assigned
Skills/Knowledge/Abilities
- The ability to effectively read, write, understand, and otherwise communicate in English is required for this position
- Ability to read and understand blueprints
- Ability to work effectively alone or with other employees, with or without direct supervision
- Basic computer skills
- Familiar with uses and applications of all types of fits, such as press fits and running fits.
- Knowledge of and proficient at using alignment and inspection tools
- Knowledge of Crane signals
- Working knowledge of welding and cutting various metals
Work Environment
- Able to use required PPE
- Able to work in extreme temperatures (hot and cold) while wearing required PPE
- Carry up to 25 pounds without assistance
- Climb ladders and on catwalks, using a safety harness
- Effective Written and Verbal communication skills
- Lift up to 50 pounds occasionally
- Mobility to move to any area of the assigned location (Rod Mill or Melt Shop)
- Safely maneuver to positions required to inspect and repair Overhead Cranes
- Strength and stamina to remain on feet for the majority of 12-hour shifts
- Strong basic computer skills, including dexterity to type on a keyboard
- Supply your basic tools (list available in HR)
- Walk up and down stairs safely
- Willing and able to learn, retain, and apply new information
