Job Profile

The company is seeking an Aerospace Welding Engineer who will be a part of the Jacobs Space Exploration Group (JSEG) support to the NASA EM32 Welding & Manufacturing (W&M) team under the Engineering Services and Science Capability Augmentation (ESSCA) contract to the NASA MSFC Engineering Directorate.

Educational Qualification

  • The applicants should have a Bachelor’s Science in Welding Engineering or related field from an ABET-accredited university/college is required.
  • Typically, educational requirements are the equivalent of a minimum of a Master’s Degree with at least 8 years of experience or a BS with at least 10 years of experience.

Work Experience

  • The selected candidate must have demonstrated experience developing, understanding, troubleshooting, and qualifying Gas Tungsten Arc Welding or Variable Polarity Plasma Arc welding processes on aerospace materials such as aluminum (alloys 2219 and 2195 preferred), stainless steel, superalloys or titanium performed by manual and mechanized techniques.
  • The selected candidate must be able to work hands-on with machine tool-like equipment involving electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic/mechanical components and systems. Experience with friction stir welding is desired, but not required.
  • Previous experience working with the following specifications and standards is desired, but not required-
    -NASA-STD-5006, “General Fusion Welding Requirements for Aerospace Materials Used in Flight Hardware.”
    -MSFC-SPEC-3679, “Process Specification – Welding Aerospace Hardware.”
    -ANSI/AWS D17.1/D17.1M:2010-AMD1, “Specification for Fusion Welding for Aerospace Applications.”

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Conduct research and development investigations to develop and test new fabrication processes and procedures, improve existing or develop new welding equipment, develop new or modify current welding methods, techniques, and procedures, discover new patterns of welding phenomena, or correlate and substantiate hypotheses.
  • Develop welding techniques, procedures, and application of welding equipment to problems involving fabrication of metals, utilizing knowledge of production specifications, properties and characteristics of metals and metal alloys, and engineering principles.
  • Direct and coordinate technical personnel in performing inspections to ensure workers’ compliance with established welding procedures, restrictions, and standards.
  • Establish welding procedures to guide production and welding personnel relating to specification restrictions, material processes, pre-and post-heating requirements which involve the use of complex alloys, unusual fabrication methods, welding of critical joints, and complex post-heating requirements.
  • Evaluate new developments in the welding field for possible application to current welding problems or production processes.
  • Exchange ideas, and information, or offer technical advice concerning welding matters.
  • Help other EM32 W&M Team customers understand and resolve problems related to their welding manufacturing processes.
  • Perform experimental welding to evaluate new equipment, techniques, and materials.
  • Prepare technical reports resulting from research and development.
  • Serve as project lead engineer to manage specific assigned customer welding development and manufacturing development projects.

Skills/Knowledge/Abilities

  • The selected candidate must be able to obtain and maintain the following customer safety certifications-
    -Welding Safety
    -Respirator (non-SCBA)
    -Confined Space Entry
    -Aerial Lift Operator
  • The selected candidate must be able to obtain and maintain permission to operate customer-owned vehicles in support of work activities.
  • The selected candidate must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license, and automobile liability insurance and successfully complete a company defensive driving training class.

Equipment/Machines

  • Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%).
  • Requires ability to operate welding equipment (100%).

Work Environment

  • General office environment (40%), industrial welding/manufacturing development laboratory/machine shop (60%).
  • Requires ability to interact effectively with co-workers, managers, and clients.
  • Requires ability to provide clear, concise, and accurate communications, both verbally and in writing (50%).
  • Travel may be necessary, but infrequent (<5%).

Physical Requirements

  • Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and without clients at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (10%).
  • Also, requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to write reports and perform engineering tasks (30%).
  • Requires standing, sitting/walking in a lab environment with hazards that require wearing safety glasses, hard hat, hearing protection, foot protection, gloves or protective clothing to perform some operations (60%).
  • Work will be performed on-site at NASA/Marshall Space Flight Center (100%).
  • Use of stairs or elevators to gain access to buildings will be required.
  • Some work requires using stairs and/or ladders to access elevated work platforms.
  • Positions can require lifting and/or maneuvering materials or equipment weighing up to 40 lbs.
