Work Experience

  • 2 years of Aircraft Structural Welding in the last 5 years
  • AWS certification and logs evidencing the type of AWS work completed.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Determines the sequence of welding to prevent or reduce the amount of warp to the weld, designs and fabricates weld holding fixtures as necessary to perform individual welding projects, performs pre-heat and post-weld stress relief operations, and maintains weld records.
  • Fusion welding on aircraft and ground support equipment to a qualified Welding Procedures Specification (WPS),
  • Performs fusion welding and torch brazing for ground support equipment, ensuring the procedure is completed per the requirements of the national welding and brazing codes and specifications.
  • Performs structural fusion welding on aerospace parts and components per the requirements of specifications as prescribed by Engineering Drawings and Work Orders.
  • Required to read and understand engineering drawings and welding symbols, fabricate manufacture-welded parts from engineering drawings without direct supervision,
  • Welds A wide variety of materials such as aluminum, magnesium, alloyed and low alloy steel, stainless steel, and nickel alloy steels.
  • Perform duties as a Qualified Weld Inspector by inspecting own welds and those of less qualified welders, and may perform duties such as training and re-certification in the various welding processes

Skills/Knowledge/Abilities

  • Required to know the materials to select the correct filler materials and shielding gas when generating the Weld Procedure Specification (WPS), produce flight critical welds, and assist in the development process of generating Weld Procedure Specifications as mandated by welding codes and specifications.
  • Uses a variety of shop tools and machines shaping and preparing materials to be welded such as chop saws, band saws, drill presses, grinders, etc.

Minimum Requirements

  • Knowledge of the materials to select the correct filler materials and shielding gas when generating the Weld Procedure Specification (WPS), produce flight critical welds, and assist in the development process of generating Weld Procedure Specifications as mandated by welding codes and specifications.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization. Note: US Citizenship is required for facility credentials/authorization at this work site.
  • Performs fusion welding and torch brazing for ground support equipment, ensuring the procedure is completed per the requirements of the national welding and brazing codes and specifications (American Welding Specification (AWS) D17.1M:2010 AMD1 Specification for Fusion Welding for Aerospace Applications.
  • Read and understand engineering drawings and welding symbols, fabricate manufacture-welded parts from engineering drawings without direct supervision,
  • Shall be subject to review and approval from the COR before operation of GFP welding equipment.
  • Tools and Toolbox are required.
  • Weld a wide variety of materials such as aluminum, magnesium, alloyed and low alloy steel, stainless steel, and nickel alloy steels.

Work Environment

  • Frequently lift parts and equipment up to 20 pounds.
  • May be exposed to extreme noise from turbine and jet engine aircraft.
  • May be exposed to fumes or airborne particles; may be exposed to electrical shock hazards or work near moving mechanical parts.
  • May be required to respond to a wide variety of operational circumstances, including extreme weather conditions and rudimentary infrastructure.
  • May work in Aircraft maintenance hangar or outside.
  • Most heavy lifting is accomplished through the use of mechanical devices.
  • Must be able to climb, stand, stoop, bend, stretch, crouch, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions.
  • Occasionally lift objects up to 50 pounds.
