Job Profile

The company is hiring an Arc Welder who will weld ferrous materials using the electric arc process in all positions per AWS D15.1 and in compliance with prescribed codes and specifications.

Performs tests, repairs, changes, improvements, and conversions to railcar parts and assemblies.

Education Level

  • Possess work-related experience (a plus)

License/Certification

  • Certifications are held per AWS D15.1.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Assists another workman in placing, fitting, and attaching parts as assigned.
  • Communicate with a supervisor as needed.
  • Comply with the established safety policies, support continuing awareness for safety, and recommend specific changes and improvements to health and safety policies and programs when possible.
  • Finishes weld by removing slag and grinding when necessary.
  • Jack cars, remove trucks, positions to tank rolls, disassembles to repair or gain access to parts needing repair, and reassembles as necessary.
  • Keeps work area in a clean and orderly manner.
  • Locates and tests areas to be welded for leaks by use of soap suds and air rechecking as necessary. (example: coils)
  • Lubricates and makes minor repairs to assigned small power, mechanical, and hand tools, replacing broken and worn parts. Lubricate, gauge, and adjust car parts as necessary.
  • Moves, sets up, and adjusts equipment and selects the rod to perform work assigned.
  • Performs minor layouts required in the performance of prescribed duties.
  • Prepares surface to be welded; burns, gauges, fits, tacks, and welds as necessary to complete repair. (example: splices, patches, shims, cracks)
  • Remove, replace, layout, burn, shape ream, and straighten as necessary to perform various repairs to: tank shell proper, fittings, couplers, gears, underframe, safety appliances, insulation jacket, and related components.

Skills/Knowledge/Abilities

  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide two-digit numbers.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as IO instructions, FM instructions, work orders, and AAR Field Manual.
  • Ability to reason through and plan work details and procedures to obtain desired results.

Work Environment

  • Must be able to climb ladders and perform work at elevated heights.
  • Must be able to perform overhead work for extended periods.
  • Must be able to physically enter confined spaces and work in enclosed environments.
  • Must be able to push/pull (horizontally) up to 140 pounds of force.
  • Must be able to safely lift (vertically) up to 51 pounds; regularly and safely lift up to 85 pounds; occasionally from the ground surface.
  • Must be able to stoop for extended periods and routinely move from kneeling to standing positions.
  • Must be able to work in extreme temperature environments.
