Job Profile

The company is looking for a Carman who will build, maintain, repair, and inspect freight cars.

Educational Qualification

  • Applicants should have an Associate’s Degree (A.S.) in Applied Sciences with emphasis on mechanical applications from a college/university or equivalent experience as a rail car inspector or repairer may be considered in lieu of the
  • A.S. degree at the discretion of the General Mechanical Superintendent; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Build, maintain, dismantle, paint and inspect all freight cars, both wood, and steel.
  • Cleans and lubricates shafts, bearings, gears, and other parts of machinery.
  • Inspect and measure parts to detect wear, misalignment, or other problems.
  • Inspecting, Testing, and Repairing air brakes and freight car parts.
  • Listens for unusual sounds from machines or equipment to detect malfunction and discusses machine operation variations with supervisors or other maintenance workers to diagnose problems or repair machines.
  • Operating punches and shears.
  • Painting, surfacing, lettering, cutting stencils, and removing paint.
  • Performs car inspections.
  • Performs oxy-acetylene cutting and electric welding.
  • Pipe and inspection work in connection with air brake equipment on cars.
  • Visually inspects and tests machinery and equipment.

Skills/Knowledge/Abilities

Language Skills-

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.

Mathematical Skills-

  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide into all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent.

Reasoning Ability-

  • Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Other Skills/Abilities-

  • Must be familiar with AAR, FRA, and DOT rules and regulations; must be able to speak and write English; must be a qualified welder.

Licenses/Certificates

  • Must have a current driver’s license

Work Environment

  • The noise level in the work environment is usually loud
  • Regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions
  • Occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles

Physical Demands

  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Occasionally lift or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Regularly required to stand and walk.
  • Occasionally required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear.

  • Key bar
  • Ball-peen hammer
  • Channel-lock pliers
  • Screw drive set (standard and Phillips)
  • 1/2″ drive socket set with sockets to 1-1/8″
  • Open and box end wrenches (size 3/16″ to 1″)
