Job Profile
The company is hiring an Estimator who will produce accurate, detail-oriented estimates on small and large complex projects. This will be accomplished through collaborative efforts with various Schuff Steel disciplines such as fabrication, purchasing, filed erection, pre-construction, sub-fabrication, and 3rd party vendors.
Provide the business with estimates that can be accurately interpreted and executed by our Pre-Construction team.
Education Level
- High School Diploma or equivalent with structural drawing or drafting coursework.
- Vocation or other secondary education program.
Work Experience
- 5 years of progressively responsible experience estimating structural steel construction projects.
- Proven experience as a construction or steel estimator.
- Must have proven experience providing companies with accurate information that aids operations in achieving corporate goals.
Duties/Responsibilities
- Adhere to and follow the Schuff estimating guidelines and procedures.
- Appraise and communicate to the management team any potential risks or costs not fully captured in the estimate that may impact the costs of the project.
- Be comfortable discussing alternative recommendations on projects in which management requires alternative estimates to meet client needs.
- Collaborate with project team members on building to specifications in fabrication and erection.
- Interact with other key team members in a professional manner
- Prepare detail-oriented and accurate estimates on new projects and estimate prices for any change orders on existing contracts, meeting assigned deadlines.
- Prepare take-off of steel materials, estimate all necessary shop labor and field erection, estimate materials, buyout items, and equipment cost, etc. to prepare a thorough bid estimate.
- Read and interpret job bid instructions, and detailed specifications, prepare a “take off” of materials included in the job, and estimate all necessary labor, materials, buyout items, and equipment costs (including crane costs) to prepare a thorough price estimate.
- Review and analyze blueprints, project specifications, and other documentation presented by the client, to accurately prepare and estimate projects.
- Type up all estimates in our in-house computer program, enter takeoffs, draw numbers, etc.
- Work directly with Sales and Pre-construction Teams to understand the size and scope of projects along with timelines and applicable project deadlines.
Skills/Knowledge/Abilities
- Thorough knowledge and an advanced understanding of each competency outlined above to carry out the essential functions of this position.
- Specialized Knowledge is also required of customary construction terminology and knowledge of estimating software packages.
- Basic understanding of job cost accounting and project management concepts.
- Comfortable with numbers and analysis.
- Great attention to detail and excellent written communication skills.
Work Environment
- Work is generally performed in a climate-controlled office area.
- Ability to sit or stand for long periods throughout an 8-10-hour day.
- Working long days, evenings, and weekends may be required as needed and required.
