Job Profile

The company is hiring a Field Services Leader who will schedule, prioritize and conduct all aspects of inspection, testing, and repair of GATX-owned and non-owned railcars while helping to maintain and foster customer relationships.

Assist with managing the Customer Site, including serving as the interim backup to the Site Manager when he or she is away from the location. Accurately completes required documentation and updates GATX, AAR, and external systems directly related to repairs performed.

Reads and interprets blueprints, schematics, GATX policies, procedures, and engineering instructions, Field Manual of the AAR Interchange Rules, applicable Manual of Standards and Recommended Practices, and DOT regulations.

Be proficient in and knowledgeable in all required Inspection, Repair, Air Brake Testing, and Non-Destructive Testing. The Leader will mentor and coach railcar mechanics.

Educational Qualification

  • The applicants should have a High School Diploma or Equivalent

Work Experience

  • Possess a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience in a manufacturing or industrial setting required, preferably with experience managing people or railcar maintenance experience.
  • Experience in materials management preferred

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Applies exterior coating to specification.
  • Applies exterior decals/stencils according to specification
  • Complies with the established safety policies and awareness for the safety of self and others, and when possible recommends specific changes and improvements to health and safety policies and programs.
  • Ensures quality of work performed meets all Regulatory, GATX, and Customer requirements.
  • Finishes welding operations by removing slag and grinding when necessary.
  • Follows all company safety rules and procedures.
  • Installs, tests, repairs or renews interior or exterior coils, cradles, brackets, and such tank fittings as outlet caps, safety vents, high-pressure manway bonnets, safety valves, high and low-pressure valves, etc.
  • Jacks car to remove/replace/disassemble/assemble trucks to repair or gain access to parts needing repair.
  • Lays out, measures, cuts, bores, burns, and shapes parts as required to obtain a proper fit.
  • Maintains work area in a clean and orderly manner.
  • Perform and mentor NDT functions as required for inspection and repair.
  • Performs Oxy-Fuel and Plasma cutting processes.
  • Performs Railcar inbound, in-process, and outbound Inspections as per QAI 404.
  • Performs repairs and maintenance as required by GATX Engineering and Quality instructions, Field Manual of the AAR Interchange Rules and applicable Manual of Standards and Recommended Practices as well as DOT regulations.
  • Prepares equipment and surfaces, welds, burns, fits, and tacks as necessary to complete repairs. (Splices, patches, shims cracks, etc.)
  • Prepares estimates for repairs; obtains appropriate approvals, secures material, and ensures appropriate car file processing.
  • Prepares surfaces of railcars to spray or decal according to GATX requirements
  • Removes, replaces, straightens, renews or repairs various car parts such as couplers, gears, center-sills, safety appliances, insulation, jackets, running boards, etc. as required to achieve proper repairs.
  • Sets up and operates bending, threading and cutting equipment to shape and fabricate pipe for installation. Applies air to brake sections, valves, levers, rods and similar equipment that is installed in conjunction with car piping.
  • Tests air brakes using a single-car tester. Replaces/repairs defective piping, valves, air brake piston, etc. as required.
  • Weld ferrous materials in multiple positions for fillet and groove welds.
  • Drives Goal Deployment – assists Site Manager in setting targets, initiatives and accountabilities relative to Safety, Quality, Delivery, and Cost.
  • Assists Site Manager in driving continuous improvement efforts and good problem-solving skills by using SQDC methodology.
  • Fosters a culture of proactive identification of issues and successful root cause and corrective action that supports GATX’s commitment to safety and quality.
  • Schedules, coordinates and prioritizes the service requests for a specific Field Services network location including inspections, repairs, and special projects assigned to the location.
  • Develops strong working relationships with key internal and external customers so as to align the Field Services location with the key business needs.
  • Helps foster an environment where additional business growth may be provided for GATX customers.
  • Ensures that all necessary GATX and customer forms, systems, and work order information is completed in order to facilitate, correct and timely reporting and billing.
  • Audits completed repair work orders, systems, and forms.
  • Manages material control and identification, including, but not limited to, ordering, receiving, and storing material.
  • Organizes, develops, and motivates the workforce. Working with the Site Manager, prioritizes work for location.
  • Trains and mentors railcar mechanics in obtaining their own certifications and qualifications. Conducts DOT compliance training.
  • Drives continuous improvement efforts and good problem-solving skills by using SQDC methodology.
  • Fosters a culture of proactive identification of issues and successful root cause and corrective action that supports GATX’s commitment to safety and quality.
  • Supports Site Manager and acts as interim manager as needed.
  • Maintains all personal certifications and qualifications.
  • Performs minor preventative maintenance on tools and equipment used and other tasks as assigned.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Work Scope

  • Demonstrate proficient abilities and skills required for performing all railcar inspections, testing, and repairs. Demonstrate proficiencies in all aspects of inventory management. Consistently demonstrate skill in customer relations, using good interpersonal skills, and be the ability to work as part of a team. Demonstrate the ability to mentor and coach.
  • Focus on assisting the Site Manager in the day-to-day management of the location as well as directing the work of other team members. While not involved in disciplinary measures, when disputes arise, this position should provide guidance and influence in resolving the situation without intervention. Documentation of specific facts will be part of this position’s responsibility. In addition, this position will serve as an interim backup when the Field Services Foreman is away from the location.
  • Interact with all levels and positions within Field Services, with various departments in Chicago, with GATX vendors, and with GATX customers. This position operates under the direction of the Site Manager within a predefined GATX structure.

Other Qualifications

  • Air Brake Certification per QAI 486 preferred.
  • Certification in NDT Leak Testing, Level II – NDT-LT preferred.
  • Certification in NDT Penetrant Testing, Level II – NDT-PT preferred.
  • Certification in NDT Visual Testing, Level II – NDT-VT preferred.
  • Qualification in Quality Training Instruction for Car Repair per QAI 405, Level 2 minimum preferred.
  • Qualification in Quality Training Instruction for Coil & Valve per QAI 406, Level 3 preferred.
  • Qualification in Quality Training Instruction for Finishing per QAI 411, Level 5 preferred.
  • Qualification in Quality Training Instruction for Inspection per QAI 408 preferred.
  • Qualification in Quality Training Instruction for Railcar Inspection per QAI 404 preferred.

Skills/Knowledge/Abilities

  • Ability and willingness to meet all customer suitability requirements required.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and verbally, in English required.
  • Background in railcar inspection and repair of all car types preferred.
  • Computer skills, including proficiency or ability to become proficient with MMS, SEM, Shop Portal, Share Point, ECM, SAP, and MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) required.
  • Knowledge of AAR, FRA, and GATX railcar maintenance standards is preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Weld Facilitator preferred.
  • Welding or journeyman certification experience preferred.
