Job Profile
The company is looking for a Fleet Deckhand I who will be responsible for assisting with the safe, prudent, and efficient operation of a marine vessel by performing various vessel-based tasks at the direction of the vessel’s Captain or Mate.
Education Level
- Not mentioned, yet a High School Diploma will be a plus
Work Experience
- Experience in Tugboat, Commercial Fishing, Oilfield, Heavy Equipment, Operations, Commercial Farming, or Shipyard Work is preferred.
- A valid Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC) is required.
Duties/Responsibilities
- Assisting barge cleaners, mechanics, and welders may also be required
- Effectively handling tow wires and cables to secure barges safely and environmentally appropriately.
- Examining cables, wires, and lines to ensure they are fit for use. Using tools to tighten or loosen the same as needed.
- General housekeeping duties and vessel maintenance checks, which may include, sweeping, mopping, painting, using power tools, and keeping the deck orderly and clean so that operations can take place in a safe and professional working environment.
- Inspecting, correcting, or notifying others of any conditions that affect the safety of people or cargo.
- Moving and operating portable pumps.
- Participating in the company’s safety culture reporting all injuries, illnesses, and near misses on time
- Performs tasks associated with building and breaking tow.
- Training in how to use the safety equipment on board and how to act in an emergency without endangering others or the vessel.
- Transferring and laying rigging, handling lines, shifting barges, dropping, or picking up barges, and checking over the tow as directed.
Skills/Knowledge/Abilities
- A valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record is required.
- Must be able to communicate, effectively, and professionally with office personnel, vessel crew, and dock personnel both verbally and in writing.
- Must be able to get along and work well with others in close quarters.
- Must be able to perform routine duties in all types of weather (hot, cold, dry, wet, slippery, icy) wearing personal protective equipment including a hard hat, safety glasses, life vest, gloves, and steel-toe boots.
- Must be able to work under pressure
- Must be flexible and able to work any work schedule.
- Must satisfactorily complete a USCG DOT Drug and Alcohol screen.
- Strength and balance are essential, as you may be required to perform duties on a moving platform.
Work Environment
- This job is classified as heavy work, which requires inside and outside work under various normal and adverse weather conditions, lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling frequently; walking, climbing reaching over shoulder, hand/eye coordination, twisting, working around unprotected heights, working around moving machinery, repetitive actions with both hands and feet.
