Job Profile
The company is hiring a Gate Removal Operator who will separate gating systems from castings using rods or torches within close tolerances to reduce grinding time and other potential rework.
To prepare castings for saws and other cleaning operations by separating gating systems without damaging castings.
Education Level
- Not mentioned, yet a High School Diploma will be a plus
Work Experience
- 3-6 months of experience in other Cleaning Operations and demonstrated ability to perform precision tasks without damaging parts.
- Experience with air carbon arc torch, or welding equipment
Duties/Responsibilities
Gating Removal-
- After removal, sorts gating by metal alloy for revert processing.
- Cleans shell material from around gating using pneumatic tools. (Marginal job function at LSBO and SSBO).
- Cuts off, cleans, documents, and verifies test bars for proper identification and routing.
- Mixes protective coating; coast castings for protection.
- Operates air carbon arc torch in burnout booth to cut and separate gating systems from parts cuts as close to the part as practical without damaging castings
- Removes gating and test bars using abrasive saws. (SSBO and LSBO only).
- Section cuts castings and gating for evaluation by engineering as needed. (LSBO and SSBO only).
- Verifies correct lot numbers and serialization; reviews Technique Cards.
Maintenance-
- To maintain burn-off equipment in proper working order.
- Performs minor maintenance on equipment, including torches, hand tools, stingers, and gas lines.
- Contacts maintenance or advises supervisor of the need for other equipment repairs/maintenance.
Training, Interaction/Documentation-
- Accept assignment of new burn-off operator(s) for training. Provide training necessary to such individual(s) to develop necessary job skills.
- Provide feedback to supervision regarding the progress of individual trainees and assessments of observed performance upon request.
- Communicate with supervisory or grinding personnel regarding tolerances achieved on parts, amount of grinding necessary, or additional burn-off possible on specific areas of parts. Accept and productively apply input, criticism, and feedback to improve the quality of future work products – particularly when working on new parts.
- Work with others including supervision, engineers, grinding, etc. to develop techniques for improving tolerances achieved and establish precision tolerances attainable on new or modified parts.

Equipment Used
- Air arc stingers and rods (LSBO and SSBO only) and gas arc torch (TBO only, marginal equipment at SSBO)

- Basic hand tools (e.g., hammer, wrenches, screwdrivers, etc.)

- Grates and bricks
- Ground bar (LSBO, SSBO only)
- Hoists, straps, chains, hooks
- Knife
- Pallet jack (marginal equipment at SSBO)
- Pneumatic tools (air gun and/or air hammer)
- Protex Spray Gun (LSBO, SSBO only)
- Tip cleaner (TBO only)
Training
- May be required to complete Hazardous Waste and Solid Waste Management Training.
- PCC’s Forklift Driving Safety Certification Training must be completed.
- Radiation Safety Training must be completed (TBO only)
- Visual Inspection Class must be completed. (SSBO only)
Skills/Knowledge/Abilities
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations. (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division)
- Ability to read and interpret Technique Cards, routers, and other special instructions.
- Ability to resolve problems and share information with others, particularly with regard to part dimensions, the potential and limits of effective burn-off techniques.
- Ability to work independently.
- Physical ability to perform the essential job functions.
Major Plant Differences
- TBO – Operators work in radioactive-controlled areas and wear radioactive badges.
- LSBO and SSBO – Operators also perform Sawyer duties.
