Job Profile

The Coast Guard is seeking a General Equipment Mechanic with the maintenance section who will perform journeyman level maintenance on mechanically-operated (electric, hydraulic, pneumatic, or combinations thereof) lock structures on the Red and/or Ouachita/Black River Systems and tributaries of these rivers.

Educational Qualification

• Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration
• 2 years trial/probationary period may be required

Work Experience

There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.

Duties/Responsibilities

• Determine the extent of needed repairs and performing operational inspections.
• Install, repair, and maintain high-pressure piping systems such as hydraulic and high-pressure air or oil line systems.
• Perform diagnostic maintenance inspections, preventive maintenance, and test on all lock operation systems.
• Perform major and minor repairs to lock operating systems, machinery, structural components, and related equipment at regularly scheduled intervals to minimize costly delays to river traffic.
• Perform welder duties using electric acetylene and/or inert gas shielded welding processes.
• Perform work from building plans, sketches, and schematics to troubleshoot, layout, and fabricate.
• Regularly operates a large mobile crane often in work areas restricted in maneuverability, such as from a barge or lock wall.

• Copy of CDL needs to be uploaded to be eligible with CDL condition of employment
• If selected at the WY-10 level, you are required to obtain a valid 4G Certification in Welding within 12 months from the date of hire (the exact timeframe is at management discretion
• If selected at the WY-11 level, you are required to currently possess a valid 4G Certification in Welding. A copy of your valid 4G certification in welding must be submitted with your application in order to be considered eligible for this position.
• This position has a requirement to lift up to 50 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
• This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter, including testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
• This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations. Employee shifts are rotated on a regularly scheduled basis.
• This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
• This position, in accordance with U.S. Army Corps of Engineers standards, requires that the individual selected must possess and maintain a valid Class ‘A’ Commercial Driver’s License with Air Brake Endorsement.

Physical Effort

• All major duties of the position are performed in locations where extensive standing, stooping, stretching, climbing, and lifting are not necessary to effectively accomplish the tasks.
• Carries objects weighing up to 30 pounds for a short distance on an occasional basis.
• Directs lower graded employees to assist and to accomplish heavy lifting and carrying.
• Occasionally climbs short ladders (i.e., to gain access to crane cab and machinery recess, etc.).
• Occasionally works from scaffolding and suspended stages.
• Uses normal coordination of eyes, hands, legs, and body in installing, repairing, operating, or testing equipment in locations easily accessible such as lock walls, machinery recesses, lock chambers maintenance shops, and yards.
• Work normally requires frequent standing, stooping, stretching, climbing, and crouching. Lifting and carrying items weighing up to 50 pounds.

Working Conditions

• Is normally assigned to the day shift, but is subject to call during other shifts in case of extreme emergency or other conditions requiring round-the-clock repair activities to restore the lock to operational status.
• Occasionally will work behind bulkheads below the water level. The incumbent is also subject to falls, drowning, injury or discomfort and when inside, exposure to drafts, changing temperatures, and loud noises.
• Uses safety equipment such as protective ear devices, hard hats, hard-toe shoes, respirators, and protective clothing.
• Working conditions have been considered in the evaluation of the job and environmental differential pay is not warranted for duties performed.
• Works inside and outside during the day or night, subject to inclement weather, on high structures usually over water which is frequently turbulent, in the proximity of moving machinery and high voltage electrical equipment on scaffolds and from slings.
