Work Experience

  • Completed a bona fide apprenticeship, or had 8 years of previous experience, or had a combination of previous work experience and training equivalent to a bona fide apprenticeship program in the trade.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Ability and willingness to learn and follow safety rules and procedures, to work in a team environment, to treat co-workers with dignity and respect regardless of personal differences, and to accept and follow instructions and requests from leadership.
  • Ability and willingness to understand and follow instructions, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to perceive differences in details and prints related to trade.
  • Ability to perform tasks of the trade, stand for extended periods, walk unassisted, work at heights, work overhead including on ladders and platforms, and manipulate tools typical of the trade.
  • Must be able to effectively maneuver vehicles, equipment, assembly lines or stations, and about the facility.
  • Tasks will require a certain amount of reaching, lifting, twisting, bending, and use of a PMHV or Hilo.
  • Willingness and ability to work on any assigned schedule, change shifts, work more than 8 hours per day, or work overtime, all while maintaining good attendance.

Skills/Knowledge/Abilities

  • Assesses equipment, structures, materials, and job specifications for appropriate welding positions and methods
  • Consults blueprints and sketches to execute jobs and tasks to specification
  • Develops working knowledge of dozens of methods used for welding a variety of materials and components
  • Follows safety protocol, including wearing heat-resistant gloves, protective masks, and safety shoes
  • Maintains a thorough knowledge of universal standards and specifications to meet building codes and legal requirements
  • Monitors equipment for appropriate usage and temperature
  • Monitors work environment for hazards and maintains healthy ventilation levels to avoid particle or gas inhalation
  • Operates specialized machinery for industrial welding or supervises robots that do the same
  • Takes apart and disposes of large metal objects like automobiles, ships, and other structures
  • Trims metal components using heat, fire, and electricity
  • Uses electricity and torches to produce heat and solder together components made from steel, titanium, copper, and other metals
  • Welds small components like copper plumbing for residential use and large ones like pipelines for power plants or beams for buildings and bridges
