Job Profile

The company is recruiting a Journeyman Tool/Die Maker who will construct and repair tools, jigs, fixtures, and gauges from prints and sketches as required.

Also performs machining and assembly of prototypes, tools, fixtures, and gauges.

Education Level

  • High School Diploma or equivalent

Work Experience

  • Possess work-related experience (a plus)

License/Certification

  • Completion of a 4-year apprenticeship program certified by the U.S. Department of Labor.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Assists other team members in meeting department requirements. Serves as a resource to production, engineering, and other plant personnel.
  • Completes appropriate paperwork, mold documentation, and maintenance records.
  • Fabricates parts with or without sketches and prints using a lathe, mill, drill press, and welder. Operates testing equipment, power tools, hand tools, torches, welders, and precision measuring instruments.
  • Influences mold design by providing input on the design of vents, cores, gates, and gate placement to engineering.
  • Maintains a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
  • Maintains and improves knowledge and skill requirements in all required trade areas.
  • Maintains user knowledge of tools, testing equipment, measuring instruments, conveyance, and material handling equipment.
  • May install service electronics, pneumatics, and hydraulics associated with mold repairs.
  • May perform intricate and detailed welding repairs, color matching, re-spotting, engineering changes, insert work, hand benching, peening, texturing, polishing, and glass spotting. Tolerances may need to be as close as .0001.
  • May perform preventative maintenance on injection molds, including disassembly, inspection, repair, and replacement of springs, ejector pins, hydraulic cylinders, limit switches, etc.
  • Operates company vehicles, conveyance, and material handling equipment.
  • Operates drill press, radial drill, milling machines, lathe, grinder, welder, torch, bench tools, spotting press, boring mill, and CNC mill.
  • Performs heat treating of steels, such as hardening, annealing, and drawing.
  • Performs precise handwork of in-mold steel to create special shapes and forms.
  • Reads and interprets blueprints, schematics, and machine manuals to build and repair molds and tools. Requires understanding of sections, views, and projections.
  • Routinely contacts suppliers or manufacturers and suppliers on mold information, repair issues, improvement needs, and shipping instructions.
  • Performs other tasks as assigned.

Skills/Knowledge/Abilities

  • Commitment to continuous learning.
  • Must be able to work with a minimum of supervision and guidance.
  • Must obtain and maintain a valid powered industrial truck operator permit and a State of Michigan Driver’s License.
  • Requires bending, heavy lifting, reaching, and working in cramped and confined spaces.
  • Requires the use of judgment, organization, initiative, teamwork, creativity, problem solving, and commitment to tasks.
