Job Profile
The company is hiring a Laser Welding Engineer who will coordinate engineering tasks in support of laser-related projects and may lead projects as principal investigator.
Support higher-level engineers with research, lab work, or other tasks within the Lasers group.
Develop technical or business opportunities and connect the customer with any of EWI’s broad range of resources.
Education Level
- BS Welding Engineering, Material Science Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering
Work Experience
- 3 years of experience in laser processing of metals and laser welding of metals using lasers
- 3 years of experience working in a research and development environment (preferred)
- Metallurgical experience/background in carbon steel, stainless steel, and nickel-based alloys preferred
Duties/Responsibilities
- Actively seek out various educational and training opportunities to keep current and demonstrate continuous growth
- Develop strong working relationships with EWI’s customers to ensure satisfaction and develop new project opportunities
- Effectively delivers oral presentations meant to inform or persuade both internal (peer and manager) and external (client) audiences
- Engage with customers to explore and understand their laser processing requirements
- Follow up and interact with customers on reactive sales transactions. Initiate the reactive sales process without guidance
- Identifies and analyzes problems, gathers and sorts relevant data, and processes logically to determine preferred solution; applies knowledge and experience to the pursuit and execution of results that solve problems for the client
- Interact with customers via the “inquiry” process to explore sales opportunities
- Lead research programs by collaborating with project managers, technicians, and engineers across other disciplines in the organization
- Offer input on the focus of EWI’s IRD funding and may develop proposals that require approval
- Operation of laser welding equipment/systems, supporting equipment, software, and hardware
- Research new manufacturing technologies related to laser processing, request quotations, select vendors, issue requisitions, schedule demonstrations, and approve tooling
- Stay current with industry trends and technical advancements
- Write clear, concise, and accurate technical project reports, presentations, or other documents for customers or internal audience
Skills/Knowledge/Abilities
- A demonstrated passion for laser processes in manufacturing
- Ability to maintain excellent customer relationships both internal and external
- Analyzes and understands the impact of individual contribution to project financial performance
- Basic metallurgical knowledge of carbon steel, stainless steel, and nickel-based alloys
- Exercises initiative and creativity within assigned project work
- Exhibits proficient written and verbal communication with customers both internal and external
- Knowledge and expertise in laser processing using 1-micron solid-state lasers
- Proven adaptability and flexibility as a part of the team
- Proven success in a team-oriented environment
- Sole US Citizenship is required
- Strong ability to plan and organize tasks
- Tolerance for process development challenges and ability to adapt
- Understanding of optical systems and proficiency in experimental analysis
- Utilizes judgment in communication styles and behaviors; recognizes the impact on other team members
- Willingness to travel periodically (10-15%) to customers and conferences
