Job Profile

The company is seeking a Lead Machinist who will machine extremely complicated equipment parts requiring the highest level of machining skills.

Fabricates and repairs metalworking dies, molds, cutting tools, jigs, and fixtures.

Education Level

  • Not mentioned, yet a High School Diploma will be a plus

Work Experience

  • Typically, at least 7 years of experience in manual machining in a metal fabrication environment.
  • Experience in an OEM food, pharmaceutical, or semiconductor part fabrication and assembly manufacturing equipment environment is a plus.
  • Working experience in an ISO or continuous improvement environment is a plus.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Calculates speeds, feeds, depths of cuts, and tapers for machining.
  • Identifies the type of material being used and performs hardness testing. Corrects or modifies tooling call-outs, offsets, speeds, and feeds to allow for variations in the material.
  • May choose the machine needed to run the part.
  • Review production schedules, material availability, and machine and personnel availability to determine readiness for production. Works with Supervisor and Production Control to generate a schedule for parts to move through the machine shop.
  • Reviews procedures, work orders, blueprints, and set-up sheets and receives verbal work instructions to plan the job layout with as few set-ups as possible.
  • Sets up the machine as required using prescribed details and operating procedures.
  • Performs all machining operations needed to complete the part. Consistently meets or exceeds manufacturing, safety, and quality targets. May perform additional operations on products such as cleaning, deburring, and sanding.
  • Logs run and setup times. Makes recommendations to time standards on the routers as needed. Makes quality improvement and cost reduction recommendations.
  • Fabricates and repairs metalworking dies, cutting tools, molds, jibs, and fixtures under limited supervision.
  • Uses measuring devices to check all part dimensions. Completes all Inspection documentation in a timely and accurate manner. Reports non-conformances.
  • Ensures that team members are receiving proper training in safety, environmental, quality, programming (Mazatrol), setup, and operation of CNC and manual machine tools. Coaches and counsels the team to improve craft, interpersonal, and problem-resolution skills. Works to identify and provide opportunities for the team to learn new skills and techniques. Assists with performance appraisals.
  • Provides input into hire, fire, salary, and job change actions. May provide input to and monitor department budget.
  • Performs routine preventative maintenance and cleaning on assigned machines. Stocks and inventories tooling, fixtures, and jigs. Maintains a neat and organized work center.
  • Orders tooling, fixturing material, consumables, equipment, and shop supplies from approved vendors and within approved budgets.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Skills/Knowledge/Abilities

  • Ability to apply knowledge of tool and die design and construction, shop mathematics, metal properties and layout, machining, and assembly procedures.
  • Ability to independently set up and perform complex machining operations to varying tolerances.
  • Basic computer skills are necessary for time recording.
  • Capable of writing and maintaining accurate setup sheets.
  • Good communication skills. Team player.
  • Mazatrol, Mastercam, G-code, and M-code are desired prerequisites.
  • Must be able to interpret complicated drawings with multiple views and machined surfaces.
  • Must be able to plan and route a job through the shop and be able to calculate accurate machining and set-up time needed at each stage of the operation.
  • Must have skills in fabrication/welding and knowledge of materials to be able to correctly select tooling needed at any stage of manufacturing and speeds and feeds for the material.
  • Must have the skills to run any manual machine needed to complete the part.
  • Working knowledge of inspection gauges and equipment. Ability to independently inspect parts to drawings using Vernier’s, dial indicators, micrometers, height gauges, pin gauges, radius gauges, etc.

Work Environment 

  • Spends majority of time in a manufacturing environment that is not air-conditioned.
  • Exposure to possible hazards includes lifting objects, occasional noise, and forklift traffic.

Physical Demands 

  • Regularly required to stand and walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach and lift with hands and arms; and talk or hear.
  • Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
