Job Profile

The company is looking for a Machine Operator who will set up and operate conventional, special-purpose, and numerical control (NC) machines and machining centers to fabricate metallic parts.

Education Level

  • High School Diploma or GED (preferred)

Work Experience

  • 1-3 months of related experience or training

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Calculates and sets controls to regulate machining factors such as speed, feed, coolant flow, and depth and angle of cut, or enters commands to retrieve, input, or edit computerized machine control media.
  • Confers with engineers, production personnel, or others to resolve machining or assembly problems.
  • Design or develop tools, jigs, and fixtures used in production.
  • Develops specifications from a general description and sketches the part or product to be fabricated.
  • Fits and assembles parts into a complete assembly.
  • Installs machined replacement parts in mechanisms, machines, and equipment, and tests the operation of the unit to ensure functionality and performance.
  • Measures, marks, and scribes the dimensions and reference points on material or workpiece as guides for subsequent machining.
  • Operates welding equipment to cut or weld parts.
  • Selects, aligns, and secures holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on machines such as mills, lathes, jig borers, grinders, and shapers.
  • Sets up and operates the machine on a trial run to verify the accuracy of machine settings or programmed control data.
  • Starts and observes machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining, and adjusts machine controls or control media as required.
  • Study blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample parts to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished workpiece, sequence of operations, and setup requirements.
  • Verifies conformance of finished workpiece to specifications.
  • Verifies dimensions and alignment of assembly.

Work Environment

  • Frequently required to walk and talk, or hear.
  • Occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes, or airborne particles; risk of electrical shock and vibration.
  • Occasionally required to sit, climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly lift or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift or move up to 25 pounds.
  • Regularly required to stand; use hands to finger, handle, or feel, and reach with hands and arms.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud.
