Job Profile

The company is hiring a Machinist A/B/C who will work to perform layout, programming, and machining operations connected with the setup and operation of jig boring and horizontal boring mill machines including DMU Mori 80/125 machining centers to create production and developmental engine parts.

Education Level

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • 2-3 year Technical Certification or Trade School or equivalent (desired)

Work Experience

  • Minimum 5 years of experience setting up and operating DMU 80/125 Mori machines
  • Minimum 5 years of experience setting up and operating large vertical/horizontal milling machines

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Add stiffeners and bumpers to set up, as necessary to support part rigidly and avoid vibration and distortion of thin-walled or other flimsy parts from tool pressure.
  • Apply machines to check dimensions and locations of less involved partial or fully completed parts and assemblies when necessary.
  • Comply with environmental/safety regulations and program requirements to ensure safe working conditions and to preserve a healthy environment. Comply with company quality and continuous improvement initiatives. Keep current with training certifications for compliance with governmental and company regulations.
  • Determine the sequence of operations, the methods required to use the fewest holding fixtures and setups, and the setup for CNC control and manual machine operation.
  • Machine locating diameters on the face plate, making holding fixtures and devices, plugs, adaptors, spaces, and other holding aides, adapting available devices when existing tooling is inadequate.
  • Maintain necessary tools, materials, or supplies to ensure steady work-flow, as well as maintain a neat and clean work area.
  • Maintain reports, documentation, and computer logs as required.
  • Make minor decisions in setups, holding procedures, and methods, following precedents.
  • May be required to train for, obtain and maintain licenses, operator permits, and certifications for assigned areas.
  • Operate hoists, lifting devices, and forklift trucks as required.
  • Perform somewhat complex operations which form to exacting drawing dimensions and tolerances for concentricity, location, and true position, parallelism, angular relationships, involving several interrelated dimensions and cuts, or holes located from one or more reference points.
  • Pick up reference points, and check the location of internal and external details, and pertinent centerlines. Shift and shim part to position so that all surfaces will be cleaned up and wall thickness will be as specified.
  • Refer complex and difficult situations to higher-graded lead machine operators.
  • Select from available supply the cutting tools and holders most appropriate for the type of material and cuts to be made and when not otherwise specified have them altered if warranted to meet requirements or improve machining and prepare sketches of special cutting tools and holders, and arrange for grinding when required.
  • Set up end measure to locate table and spindle as appropriate.
  • Under the direction of a higher-grade machinist, working lead, or supervisor follow detailed instructions to plan, layout, and perform basic setups and operations.
  • Use shop mathematics, including algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and handbook formulas to find missing dimensions, convert angular to linear dimensions, develop less involved programs, work from drawings, layout parts, and solve other machining problems.
  • When utilizing CNC machines work with programmers and higher-grade operators to plan and set up controls and debug programs.
  • Work from drawings, WI, and detailed computer work instructions of the supervisor to set up and operate jig boring and horizontal boring mill machines and DMG machining centers.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
