Job Profile

The company is looking for a Maintenance Lead who will direct all hands-on activities regarding technical work involving installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of pneumatic, hydraulic, mechanical, electrical, and electronic equipment.

May decide whether equipment can run or must be shut down, determine power requirements and adequacy of existing and proposed circuits, design and modify circuits when necessary to satisfy changing requirements, and decide whether circuits meet NEC, OSHA, and Valmont requirements.

Education Level

  • Must either graduate from an acceptable Technical Training Program or have at least 2 years of experience as an Industrial Electrician and Mechanic.

Work Experience

  • 2 years of experience reading and interpreting electrical schematics, blueprints, and National Electrical code books for both AC and DC electrical systems.
  • 2 years of working knowledge of pneumatic, hydraulic, electrical, and mechanical systems.
  • 6 months of experience in a leadership role, formal or informal leading a team of employees.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Engage and facilitate problem-solving teams in support of The Valmont Way initiative.
  • Knows solid-state circuits, AC and DC circuits, and the function of components.
  • Inspects machines for faulty wiring, excessive wear, and unsafe conditions.
  • Install all types of electrical distribution equipment including high and low-voltage switch gears, bus sways, gutters, disconnects, conduits, and cables following the National Electric Code.
  • Installs controllers and control equipment. Can modify equipment as necessary to adapt it for current requirements.
  • Work safely, and follow safe working practices, including lockout and tag-out procedures and other safety regulations. Ensures his team is following all safety rules and regulations at all times.
  • Lifting, carrying, bending, kneeling, stretching, stooping, and working in awkward and confined positions.
  • Maintain appropriate professional competencies, certifications, licenses, etc. necessary to perform the job.
  • Makes management aware of training needs. Consult with management immediately if being asked to perform work not trained or not comfortable performing due to potential safety or risk implications. Assists in the training of other maintenance personnel. Able to be certified to operate forklifts, cranes, and straddle buggies.
  • Operates lifting equipment such as forklift trucks, overhead cranes, cherry pickers, and man lifts safely and effectively.
  • Perform all of the following duties and responsibilities without supervision. Ability to be requested at irregular hours to handle emergencies at the plant.
  • Performs administrative functions such as recording labor and materials, maintaining spare parts inventories, requisitioning parts and materials, shift reports, and determining root cause of equipment failures.
  • Performs preventive maintenance of all types of machinery and equipment.
  • Performs routine electrical tasks such as installation and repair of lighting fixtures, appliances, welding machines, motors, electrical troubleshooting, and repair on all plant and production equipment.
  • Reports unsafe conditions immediately and takes immediate action to get them corrected.
  • Troubleshoots and repairs overhead cranes, specialized production equipment, high-frequency induction equipment, CNC and NC equipment, communications equipment, complicated magnetic circuits, and electrical distribution equipment.
  • Uses National Electric Code and local codes to ensure that all systems comply.
  • Uses troubleshooting aids such as volt, ohm, and amp meters, oscilloscopes, and digital read-outs, and accurately interprets readings to identify problems.
  • Will perform mechanical repairs, housekeeping, and other routine tasks as directed.

Skills/Knowledge/Abilities

  • Able to read and interpret DVM (digital voltage meter).
  • PC literate (PLC software, Windows, etc.).
  • Proficient in manufacturing math; multiplication, division, decimals to fractions, fractions to decimals.
  • Read, write, and speak English.
  • The ability to demonstrate mechanical and basic electrical knowledge through testing.

For Highly Qualified

  • Certified Electrician credentials.
  • 1 year of previous experience in a supervisory or leadership role.
  • 3 years of experience as an Industrial Electrician.
  • 3 years of experience working with pneumatic, hydraulic, electrical, and mechanical systems.

Work Environment

  • Must be able to lift up to 100 lbs.
  • The ability to climb and work from ladders, man-lifts, bridge cranes, and roofs over 80 ft.
