Job Profile

The company is looking for a Manual Machinist who will set up and operate a variety of machine tools to produce precision parts, instruments, and repairs as part of the manual machining process. Includes precision instrument makers who fabricate, modify, or repair mechanical instruments.

May also fabricate and modify parts to make or repair machine tools or maintain industrial machines, applying knowledge of mechanics, shop mathematics, metal properties, layout, and machining procedures.

Education Level

  • Not mentioned, a High School Diploma (a plus)

Work Experience

  • Experienced in the operation of manual, heavy industrial horizontal lathes, manual precision lathes, and manual horizontal and manual vertical boring mills.
  • Experienced in manual machining of small to large rotating equipment and supporting pieces.
  • Experience in heavy industrial machines (highly desired)
  • Significant mechanical knowledge or experience
  • CNC experience (a plus, but not a requirement)

Duties/Responsibilities

General Machining Functions-

  • Ability to perform preventive maintenance according to published guidelines.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical layouts, blueprints, and equipment manuals.
  • Able to make hand drawings as required.
  • Align and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, machines, and materials onto machines.
  • Bore, key, and drill set screw holes on gears, hubs, couplings, and fans.
  • Calculate dimensions and tolerance using knowledge of mathematics and instruments such as micrometers and veneer calipers.
  • Capability to write and edit simple G-code/M-code programs for retrofitted machines.
  • Machine and fit tapered shafts and hubs.
  • Machine imperial and metric threads, internal and external.
  • Machine parts to specifications using manual machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, shapers, or grinders.
  • Measure, examine, and test completed units to detect defects and ensure conformance to specifications using precision instruments.
  • Monitor the feed and speed of machines during the machining process.
  • Set controls to regulate the manual machining process.

Motor Shop Machining Functions-

  • Ability to flame spray-bearing journals or sleeve-bearing journals.
  • Bore and sleeve end brackets.
  • Machine modifications to equipment frames for items such as bearing temperature sensors, bearing isolator seals (Inpros), and other similar upgrades.
  • Mix and apply Belzona/industrial epoxy surface coatings on shafts and finish machine.
  • Skim cut equipment frame mounting surfaces including base plates, rabbet fits, etc.

Skills/Knowledge/Abilities

  • Ability to exercise initiative, sound judgment, and effective time management in a fast-paced environment with limited supervision.
  • Be self-sufficient, have excellent problem-solving skills, and work efficiently with a high level of accuracy.
  • Highly motivated with interpersonal skills to effectively work in a collaborative team environment.
  • Highly safety conscious for self and others on the team.
  • Must be able to work with minimal supervision.
  • Must be willing to work overtime and/or be available on call to satisfy emergency customer requests.

Other Duties-

  • Clean and maintain the work area.
  • Communicate with operators from other shifts.
  • Complete daily maintenance and repair logs.
  • Maintain and secure work tools.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience (required)
  • Must be able to pass a drug test and background check.
  • Perform preventative and predictive maintenance on shop equipment.
  • Select the appropriate tools, machines, and materials to be used in preparation for machinery work.
  • Troubleshoot and repair shop machinery.
  • Turn off and lock out equipment when not in use.
  • Write and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs).
