Education Level
- Bachelor of Science in Material Science and Engineering
Work Experience
- 1-3 years of experience as a Materials Engineer, Materials Specialist, Metallurgist, or related field.
- Some experience in a metal fabrication facility and computer skills including Microsoft Word and Excel
Duties/Responsibilities
- Analyze metal fabrication problems about materials, tooling, or processes
- Analyze, select, or recommend materials for new or existing products or products returned from the field
- Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
- Create technical reports and method development procedures or standard work to be reviewed by peers or department leadership.
- Instruct others in the field of introductory Metallurgy as part of the S&C Continuous Improvement Institute
- Prepare samples for the optical or scanning electron microscopes and then complete the examination
- Provide assistance, guidance, and problem-solving results to other departments and regional centers
- Recommend or use heat treating or metal joining processes for new or existing products
- Use a computer to analyze and document tests test data, and formalize standard procedures
- Use Rockwell, Brinell, Knoop, and Tukon Hardness testing equipment
- Work on multiple projects simultaneously and able to work well with others in an LPS team environment
- Work with hourly personnel and supervision at all levels, product engineers, sales, field service, and Global Supply Specialist including Suppliers to inform, educate, and resolve product issues
Skills/Knowledge/Abilities
- Knowledge of heat treatment processes, metal finishing processes such as plating and painting, powder metallurgy, welding, brazing, soldering, ferrous and nonferrous metals, casting processes, cast metals, and mechanical and physical testing of metals and alloys
Preferred Qualifications
- Capable of operating instruments in the laboratory including carbon, sulfur analyzer, X-ray systems for analysis metals, accelerated corrosion testing, metallurgical mounting including microscopy, the Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), and other equipment in the Laboratory.
Physical Demands
- Bending: Some bending when lifting or adjusting equipment.
- Carrying: Infrequent carrying of bulky items weighing from a few ounces up to 30 pounds.
- Environment: Full-service Analytical Laboratory capable of analyzing plastics, rubbers, metals, alloys, paints, coatings, aqueous solutions, nonmetallic solids, and organic liquids.
- Handling: Occasional handling of sample parts using various hand or power tools or a variety of chemicals.
- Lifting: Items can vary in weight from a few ounces to 10 pounds. Occasional lifting up to 30 pounds.
- Pulling: Infrequent use of a hand truck to move materials and equipment.
- Pushing: Infrequent use of a hand truck to move materials and material to supply equipment or instruments.
- Reaching: Occasional reaching above shoulders to below knees required.
- Standing: About 25% of the time will require standing and may be continuous in a day.
- Walking: Regular walking to different areas of the S&C campus.
