Job Profile

The company is seeking a Manufacturing/Mechanical Engineer who will apply manufacturing engineering principles to contribute to or lead projects ranging from novel research initiatives to supporting stockpile stewardship programs involving existing and new technologies.

Also, includes metal additive manufacturing, metal powder atomization, characterization, and analysis, and state-of-the-art manufacturing technologies.

This position is in the Materials Engineering Division (MED) within the Engineering Directorate.

Education Level

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering (college/university)
  • An equivalent combination of education and previous relevant experience

Work Experience

  • Comprehensive, broad experience and proficiency in metal additive manufacturing processes and process development and analysis, with a proven ability to apply these to both new and existing moderately complex to complex processes/equipment.
  • Comprehensive engineering knowledge associated with moderately complex to complex additive manufacturing and metal powder characterization and significant experience interpreting specifications and mechanical drawings.

Additional Qualifications (SES.3 Level)-

  • Advanced knowledge of complex metal powder production and significant experience and knowledge in the design and evaluation of complex systems, and processes.
  • Experience developing or instituting material characterization tools for the optimization of processing parameters.
  • Experience standing up new technologies and capabilities in a manufacturing/research environment.
  • Significant experience managing project scopes and schedules as well as developing research proposals.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Perform moderately complex to complex systems operations and interpret specifications and mechanical drawings.
  • Plan and execute strategies to quantify the performance of new and existing technologies ranging from additive manufacturing to powder characterization, and beyond while working under limited direction.
  • Present technical approaches, project plans, and documentation to peers and program managers.
  • Provide engineering solutions for the manufacturing and metal powder processes used in the fabrication of moderately complex to complex components, including hardware design, procedure development, and powder analysis.
  • Solve moderately complex to complex technical issues related to manufacturing operations that require comprehensive knowledge and broad experience.
  • Work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional Duties (SES.3 Level)-

  • Apply advanced knowledge and significant experience in manufacturing technologies and process development including providing technical direction and leadership to cross-disciplinary teams as well as external vendors.
  • Develop research and development proposals independently, under minimal direction.
  • Manage complex project scopes and schedules.

Desired Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Material Science and Engineering.
  • Ph.D., Mechanical Engineering or Materials Science and Engineering.
  • Experience with welding equipment, including GTAW (TIG) welding and robotic welders.
  • Experience in process engineering.
  • Experience with freefall gas atomization.
  • Experience with reactive metal powders.
  • Experience working with customized foundry and welding systems in an R&D environment and working with radioactive/fissile materials.
  • Knowledge or experience working with powder bed fusion additive manufacturing and metallic powders.

Skills/Knowledge/Abilities

  • Ability to work independently, under limited direction, and collaboratively as part of a team with effective organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information.
