Job Profile

The company is looking for a Sr. Manager (Operations) who will be responsible for analyzing the effectiveness of existing operating processes including adherence to regulatory Quality and Technical Standards to ensure business growth and achievement of financial and operations metrics.

The position will also be responsible for designing, developing, and implementing key performance indicators; then analyzing lead and lag measures to make continuous improvements in the operations.

Educational Qualification

  • The applicants should have a BA/BS in a related field from a college/university or equivalent industry experience in a comparable role, both a degree and experience are a plus.

Work Experience

  • Possess 10 to 15 years of progressive leadership experience in a freight railroad (tank car) maintenance/operations environment with demonstrated success in meeting key objectives.
  • Process improvement experience (4DX, Lean, Six Sigma, etc.).

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the management team to develop and implement plans for the operational infrastructure of systems, processes, and personnel designed to accommodate the growth objectives of the region.
  • Coordinate internal and external resources to ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations (AAR FRA, DOT, OSHA, etc.) as well as internal company policy implementation.
  • Develops and maintains strong customer relationships. Establish customer service measurements, evaluation, and reporting processes to properly manage service performance; ensuring customer concerns are addressed, including developing action plans to close services gaps.
  • Establish and maintain measurement systems and metrics to provide senior leadership with broad information about the status of operations.
  • Leader for the region’s plant managers (direct reports) including staffing selections, professional development, training, and holding the team accountable for results.
  • Partner with corporate Quality and EHS departments to ensure product quality and risk mitigation; leader in implementing EHS and Quality standards within the unit.
  • Responsible for asset performance over the expected useful life of assets by ensuring proper maintenance programs and care.
  • Responsible for the development and execution of a capital expenditure program including quality expectations, budgets, and timelines.
  • Travel is required approximately 50% or greater depending on home location.
  • Other duties may be assigned.

Skills/Knowledge/Abilities

  • Strong working knowledge of budgeting/financial principles including GAAP and P&L
  • Ability to develop and maintain positive working relationships
  • Ability to organize effectively, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines
  • Excellent verbal, written, and electronic communication skills while communicating with all levels of the organization
  • Experience performing root cause analysis of incidents, hazard assessment, job safety analysis, and job safety observations.
  • Foster teamwork with proven leadership skills
  • Industry knowledge of AAR, FRA rules, DOT regulations; federal and local EHS knowledge
  • Proficient in computer software applications, including Microsoft Office, internal and customer billing systems, car management systems, and ERP systems
  • Working knowledge of internal and external surface preparation and coatings systems application and maintenance for Tank car tanks.
  • Working knowledge of NDT processes and requirements per MSRP M-1002 Appendix T.
  • Working knowledge of Tank car control valves to include OEM and reconditioning.
  • Working knowledge of Tank car Repair, Alteration, and Conversion to Tank cars per MSRP M-1002 Appendix R. Examples are re-qualifications and retrofits.
  • Working knowledge of welding processes and requirements per MSRP M-1002 Appendix W.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license with a clear record.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of related regulations i.e. Code of Federal Regulations, workplace requirements i.e. OSHA, material, and labor requirements for the work in a tank car environment.
  • Project Management skills include the ability to organize and prioritize multiple client projects to meet deadlines.

Work Environment

  • Ability to wear PPE as required for the environment.
  • Heavy Industrial Environment
  • May work around a multitude of hazardous chemicals/wastes through the supervision/execution of your and your teams’ daily duties while repairing railcars which may be in open or OSHA permit-required confined space.
  • A mix of office and rail yard environments.
  • With the exception of clerical, administrative, and some management positions, which require indoor work, the physical environment requires the employee to work both inside and outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, dry/arid, and dusty conditions.
