Job Profile

The company is searching for a Senior Metallurgist Scientist who will provide advanced engineering analysis, microscopy expertise, and technical leadership in support of new and existing welding and related processes for medical device components and assemblies.

This person will work in close collaboration with the members of the MECC technical staff and with business partners across the company in the areas of materials science and engineering.

Educational Qualification

Work Experience

  • The candidates should have a minimum of 4 years of relevant experience or advanced degree with a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience

Nice to Have-

  • Ph.D. or Post Doc in Materials Science or MS with 2+ years work experience or BS with 4+ years work experience. Degree(s) in related fields of science and engineering will be considered if appropriate.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in weld metallurgy, including additive manufacturing of metals.
  • Four or more years of technical experience in design, materials science, and/or mechanical engineering in an industrial or academic setting

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with external partners to expand internal capabilities
  • Communicate test plans, results, strategies via written technical documents and oral presentations
  • Conduct hands-on laboratory work, collaborate with fellow team members, supervise technicians and interns. Support technology, R&D, and Operations technical staff across MECC
  • Partner with Medtronic Operational Units to reduce technical risks associated with materials selection and mechanical design in new and existing products through the judicious use of prototypes, failure analysis, microscopy, or mechanical testing
  • Share experience and knowledge with Operational Unit partners
  • Support internal teams in the creation and implementation of test methods for assessing product reliability and in the application of first principles understanding to materials characterization and processing with emphasis on weld metallurgy, including additive manufacturing of metals

Skills/Knowledge/Abilities

  • Ability to build relationships and work effectively with others in cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to work from the scientific fundamentals to complex engineered systems
  • Demonstrated ability to perform failure analyses.
  • Demonstrated problem solving and critical thinking skills
  • Demonstrated research experience through publications in metallurgy
  • Demonstrated time management and organization skills. The ability to work on more than one project at a time is essential.
  • Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills
  • Hands-on experience with optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, metallography, mechanical testing, and fixture design.
  • In-depth understanding of mechanical behavior of metals and alloys, metallurgical analysis and fractography, mechanical testing, fracture mechanics, and fatigue.
  • Willingness to travel.
  • Working knowledge and expertise in the areas of metallurgy of 3D printing or welding, prediction of high cycle fatigue performance, micro, and nanomechanical testing, or environmentally assisted cracking.
