Job Profile

The company is hiring a Senior Production Engineer who will conduct daily oversight and surveys of conditions found at FMM Shipyard, receiving reports from each SME and developing weekly and monthly reports to the lead Production Support Manager.

Brief SUPSHIP leadership as needed to report any significant conditions found or observed trends that could affect cost, quality, or schedule.

Education Level

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Naval Architecture, Marine or Mechanical Engineering; or substitute 10 years of ship production support, including any US Navy shipbuilding or repair oversight experience.

Work Experience

  • 8-10 years of Navy or shipbuilding production experience
  • Experience in quality control, surveying, and accuracy control in a shipbuilding environment.
  • Experience working in a shipyard production environment and a supervisory role.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Conduct daily walk-throughs of the various shops fabricating deck panels, bulkheads, and other structural components or sub-assemblies to validate general compliance with drawings and specification requirements, including alignment of scantlings IWO module connection points.
  • Confirm standard accuracy control processes are being followed for jig and fixture installations, and temporary blocking for modules or submodules.
  • Confirm standard etching or markings are applied to provide necessary information for shopfitters and welders to position and orient structural members, including frame, buttock, waterlines, and molded lines, and also verify weld types and sizes are provided.
  • Develop and submit monthly reports of all completed activities to the lead production engineer.
  • Develop and submit weekly reports of activities, including conditions found by the onsite production team and any anomalies or concerns observed during shipyard walk-throughs to the lead Production Support Manager.
  • Observe material handling, rigging, and transport practices for safe methods and processes and report any issues/concerns.
  • Observe the overall quality of fabrication and welding work and report any conditions found.
  • Participate in scheduled meetings with SUPSHIP, shipyard personnel, and subcontractors, providing inputs when needed.
  • Support the local Supship team as needed and respond to emergent requests for information or data from PMS 515P (FFG Production Team, Washington Navy Yard).

Skills/Knowledge/Abilities

  • An active DoD Secret clearance post-employment
  • Excellent oral and technical report-writing skills
  • Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • The ability to travel at least 10% of the time

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience in AutoCAD, 3D modeling (Navisworks, Ship Constructor), numerical control programming, lofting, and nesting
  • Experience in heavy lift, module roll-over, and transport operations
  • Experience in ship blocking, launching, and dry-dock operations
  • 5-10 years of heavy steel fabrication and welding experience
