Job Profile

The company (GKN’s Global Technology Centre) is recruiting a Senior Research Engineer (Sustainable Manufacturing) who will draw on diverse engineering background and knowledge of metallic manufacturing processes to undertake R&D projects in the TRL2-6 range.

Manage and report packages of work within a collaborative research programme and be responsible for working with partners and suppliers, organising the manufacture and testing of components and materials.

The position will have sound experience in leading technical work, including budgeting, scheduling, and risk management.

Educational Qualification

Essential-

  • An undergraduate degree in an engineering or scientific discipline
  • Experience in collaborative working in a research and development environment
  • Experience in planning and managing research projects and budgets
  • Experience in writing significant technical reports and publications
  • Specialist experience in one or more metallic manufacturing technologies and metallic materials used in aerospace

Desirable-

  • A higher or research degree qualification such as a Master’s, Ph.D., or Eng D.
  • Chartered Engineer with a relevant institution
  • Experience in a diverse range of metal manufacturing processes, e.g. metal forming, welding, fabrication, metal bonding, machining, inspection, and assembly and automation techniques
  • Experience working in the Aerospace Industry on product development or manufacturing
  • Management of collaborative research work with partner organizations
  • Qualifications related to Project Management
  • Qualifications related to Sustainability or Life Cycle Assessment

Work Experience

  • Possess work-related experience (a plus)

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Ensure all work is carried out in a safe manner, following GKN processes and where necessary supporting document authorship, review, and audits.
  • Support Work Stream leads and Project Managers to deliver advances in TRL (Technology Readiness Level) for sustainable metallic manufacturing technologies
  • Develop and review clear technical statements of work for projects for both internal and external teams
  • Prepare technology development plans (TDPs) and technology business cases (TBCs) for projects
  • Keep project plans up to date, including progress towards deliverables and milestones, preparing material for monthly internal reporting and quarterly external reporting
  • Build and manage relationships with Ecosystem partners to ensure that work is completed to the required standard and delivers valuable outcomes to GKN Aerospace.
  • Visit key Ecosystem partners: Universities, Research Technology Organisations, and suppliers to discuss and agree with project work and check progress.
  • Prepare and operate various pieces of equipment for experimentation and analysis of specimens. E.g. mechanical test machines, microscopes, metrology equipment, 3D printers
  • Undertake relevant technical work with GTC equipment, detailed record keeping, analysis of technical data, and creating good quality technical reports
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge in metallic manufacturing technologies relevant to the current project and build a working knowledge of other work within the ATOM team
  • Support the team by proposing continuous improvements in ways of working and engaging positively with other teams and functions within the GTC and wider business
