Job Profile

The company is searching for a Set Up Operator who will set up, troubleshoot problems, change, and adjust tooling and machines to meet blueprint specifications, production and quality standards, and to assure safe operations.

Operate machines as scheduled.

Train other employees to operate the machine correctly and safely.

Education Level

  • Must possess a High School Diploma or GED

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Drive the forklift to transport and load fixtures, move machinery, etc.
  • Employee must perform his/her job within acceptable safety, environmental, quality, productivity, and performance standards as outlined in plant policies, handbooks, and applicable work instructions.
  • Handle all materials and tools, and have operating knowledge of all machines. Employee must be able to perform preventive maintenance, set up, and make adjustments to tooling and machines plant-wide to assure the capability of meeting production and quality standards, and operate safely.
  • Identify problems and apply effective problem–solving skills and mechanical ability to take corrective action.
  • Log changes in tooling and machines into the SPC computer system or chart.
  • Over time, as required/requested.
  • Set up, change, and adjust tooling and machines on all lines in the plant to run different part numbers and correct production or quality problems to meet specifications and quality standards.
  • Train the workforce on preventive maintenance and proper use of machines on all lines.
  • Troubleshot problems and perform minor repairs on all machines in the plant, and assist other Setup, Machine Operators, Welders, Production Leaders, Engineers, and quality personnel with troubleshooting and correcting problems as needed.
  • Use Lean principles, Quick Change Technology, Total Productive Maintenance, Cell Design, and 5S as tools to help our plant run more efficiently.
  • Work without direct supervision but perform as a team member to respond to other employees’ and supervisors’ requests and assist other employees as needed.

Skills/Knowledge/Abilities

  • Ability to communicate effectively with Machine Operators, Team Leaders, Production Leaders, Engineering Maintenance, Quality, etc.
  • Ability to read, write, and understand work orders, technical documentation and diagrams, directions, and safety regulations
  • Ability to set up and adjust all tooling and functions of all machines to make changes and adjustments to meet specifications and quality standards of parts.
  • Ability to troubleshoot machine and tooling problems and take corrective action
  • Ability to work in a team environment with other employees
  • Ability to work on own without direct supervision, but able to respond to directions and job assignments
  • Flexibility to work long hours or different work schedules and to respond to problems, changes, and job assignments
  • Good math skills
  • Knowledge and ability to operate all machines on all lines.
  • Knowledge and application of SPC, visual quality inspection, and the ability to use and read calipers and gauges at all machines and work stations on each line
  • Mechanical and Electronic skills
  • Must demonstrate mechanical skills and sufficient ability to read, write, and communicate to accurately complete production, SPC, and other paperwork and to work effectively with other employees.

  • Hand Welders
  • Machines: Benders, I.O. Sizer, Presses, Threader, Expander, T.C. Cutter, Flare, Hole Punch, Heff, Extruder, Notcher, RTBF, Spinners, Automatic Welders, Robot
  • Safety: Safety Glasses, Safety Shoes, Earplugs, Gloves
  • Saws

Work Environment

  • Fast–paced work environment
  • Frequent skin exposure to chemical–based fluids such as coolant, drawing compounds, lubrication oils, etc.
  • Small, cramped workspaces at some machines
  • Varying temperatures (cold to hot)
  • Weld exhaust fumes at welding stations
  • Wet, slippery floors in some areas

Physical Demands

  • Good visual ability
  • Ability to lift up to 50 – 100 lbs.
  • Extensive walking, stooping, bending, twisting, arm and hand motion
  • Manual dexterity
