Job Profile

The company is hiring a Mechanical Sheet Metal Worker who will fit the pipe in shops, yards, buildings, and passenger coaches.

Education Level

• High School Diploma or GED
• 18 years of age or older

Work Experience

• 1 year of pipe fitting experience
• 1 year of experience reading and interpreting technical drawings or schematics
• 1 year of experience in Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW)
• 1 year of experience using an oxy-propane torch

Duties/Responsibilities

• Bend, fit, cut, thread, braze, connect, and disconnect air, water, gas, oil, and steam pipes
• Build, erect, assemble, install, dismantle, and maintain parts made of copper, brass, tin, zinc, white/black metal of 10 gauge and lighter, including brazing, soldering, thinning, and leading
• Ensure compliance with all railroad rules and regulations for safety, operations, and the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA)
• Move locomotives
• Operate pipe threading machines
• Oxy-propane and arc welding
• Miscellaneous activities and responsibilities as assigned by the manager

Skills/Knowledge/Abilities

• Communication skills (provide clear instructions/directions)
• Mechanical aptitude
• Reasoning skills (problem-solving and troubleshooting skills)
• Valid Driver’s License
• Verbal comprehension (Understanding oral and written communications)

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) or Flux Core Arc Welding (FCAW)
• 3 years of combined sheet metal, fabrication, or pipefitting experience

Physical Requirements

• Demonstrate auditory and visual acuity, tracking, and inspection
• Exposure to equipment that intensifies the heat factor on an occasional basis
• Heavy work, lifting up to 70 pounds occasionally and up to 100 pounds on a rare basis
• Stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, crawl, balance, and climb

Job Requirements

• Work safely to prevent on-the-job accidents and injuries
• Wear protective equipment such as a hard hat, hearing protection, or safety-toe boots
• Work hours may include a nonstandard workweek, overtime, and various shift work
• Complete annual training and pass safety rules examinations
• Must pass a post-offer medical examination, including a drug test
