Job Profile
The company (Boeing Global Services (BGS) organization) is seeking a Strength Engineer to join its Mechanical Ground Support Equipment (GSE) engineering design team.
Provide strength input/guidance, analysis (such as FEA), and approval of newly designed or modified mechanical GSE.
Primarily support Air Dominance\Phantom Works, Air Proprietary 1 (AP1) Program with the potential for supporting a variety of military aircraft platforms, such as F-15, F/A-18, T-X, MQ-25, AAS, and others.
Educational Level
- Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Engineering or any technical field from a College/University
Work Experience
- 3+ years of experience in one or more areas of aircraft structures such as design, strength, fatigue
- 3+ years of experience with engineering fundamentals such as material properties, free-body diagrams, structural loads, and analysis methods
- Experience with finite element analysis (FEA)
Duties/Responsibilities
- Coordinate sizing and loads with the air vehicle team to support equipment-to-air vehicle interfaces.
- Derive static loads through a free body and apply them with either hand calculations or finite element analysis (FEA). Typical software: PATRAN, NASTRAN, Hypermesh, StressCheck, CSW, and TK Solver.
- Document results in a strength report
- Evaluate supplier hardware non-conformances and material substitutions
- Make engineering design recommendations based on analysis, loads, material properties, configurations, safety factors, etc.
- Perform a strength assessment for a variety of mechanical GSE structural components, mechanisms, and occasional fluid system components.
- Provide strength input and recommendations for new 3-D engineering layouts, 3-D models, designs/drawings, and 2-D drawing changes for a wide variety of mechanical ground support equipment
- Support internal, informal peer reviews and formal design reviews as needed
- Support internal, informal peer reviews and formal design reviews as needed
- Supports proposal preparation and new business development efforts.
- Trains and coaches others.
- Work independently with advisement from other, more experienced strength engineers
- Works under minimal direction.
Skills/Knowledge/Abilities
- Ability to occasionally travel domestically, work flexible hours, overtime, and occasional weekends when necessary
- Ability to work independently and with a cross-functional team
Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity with mechanism analysis
- Familiarity with weld analysis
- General familiarity with mechanical support equipment
- General knowledge of fabrication methods for mechanical hardware, such as machining, welding, processing, and assembly
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
Work Conditions
- The work environment is an office setting, collocated with mechanical design engineers.
- There will also be occasional visits to suppliers to witness proof load tests and acceptance tests.
