Job Profile

The company is searching for a Structural Fitter who will permanently join metal parts, such as pipe or metal plates as specified by layout, blueprints, work orders, welding procedures, or oral instructions through the application of heat or electric arc-welding equipment.

Educational Qualification

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Assists other welders or fitters, as needed.
  • Bolts, clamps and welds together metal components of products such as piping systems, plate, pipe, and tube or structural shapes, using arc and arc gas welding equipment.
  • Connects cable from welding unit to obtain amperage, voltage, slope, and pulse as specified by procedure or supervisor.
  • Examines weld for bead size and other specifications.
  • Lays out, positions, aligns, and fits components together in various body positions.
  • Loads, transports and unloads material, tools, equipment, and supplies.
  • Manually guides electrode or gun along weld line, maintaining the length of arc and speed and movement to form specified depth of fusion and bead, as judged from color of metal, the sound of weld, and size of molten puddle.
  • May assist in lifting, positioning, and securing of materials and workpieces during installation.
  • May be required to use Gas-Metal Arc, Flux-Cored Arc, Gas-Tungsten Arc, Submerged Arc, or Shielded Metal Arc welding processes.
  • May clean or degrease weld joint or workplace, using a wire brush, portable grinder, or chemical bath.
  • May manually apply filler rod to supply weld metal.
  • May preheat workpiece, using hand torch or heating furnace. May cut metal plates or structural shapes.
  • May remove excess weld, defective weld material, slag and spatter, using carbon arc gouge, hand scrapper, grinder, or power chipper.
  • May repair broken or cracked parts and fill holes.
  • May tack weld assemblies together.
  • May weld in a flat, horizontal, vertical, or overhead position.
  • Obtains specified electrode and inserts electrode into portable holder or threads consumable electrode wire through the portable welding gun.
  • Performs minor maintenance or cleaning activities of tools and equipment.
  • Performs only procedures certified in.
  • Responsible for observing and complying with all safety and project rules.
  • Safety is a priority; employees must understand construction risks and bring them to the attention of their supervisor.
  • Selects equipment and plans layouts, assembly, and welding, applying knowledge of geometry, physical properties of metal machining, weld shrinkage, and welding techniques.
  • Select the type and size of pipe or other related materials and equipment according to specifications.
  • Starts the power supply to produce an electric current.
  • Strikes arc which generates heat to melt and deposit metal from electrode to workpiece and join edges of the workpiece.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Skills/Knowledge/Abilities

  • Ability to carry tools.
  • Ability to lift at least 50 lbs.
  • Ability to move in and around confined and cluttered places and uneven areas.
  • Ability to perform repetitive movements.
  • Ability to reach with arms and use tools above/over the head.
  • Ability to sit, balance/climb ladders, scaffolds, and other objects.
  • Ability to stand (for extended periods of time), walk, stoop, kneel, squat, crawl, and twist.
  • Ability to use hands to grasp.
  • Ability to work up to a 12-hour shift in all weather and temperature extremes.
  • Apply basic mathematics to solve problems.
  • Compare and see differences in the size, shape/form of lines, figures, and objects.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and listening skills are required.
  • Make decisions based on measurable criteria.
  • Must be able to perform the essential physical requirements listed below in harsh or stressful conditions.
  • Must be able to work at heights.
  • Must be able to work individually and in a team.
  • Must be able to work under pressure.
  • Must be proficient in a reading blueprint.
  • Must pass weld test as determined per site requirements.
  • Must wear PPE in designated areas.
  • Plan work and select proper tools.
  • Vision adequate to perform all required tasks.
  • Visualize objects in three dimensions from plans and drawings.
  • Willingness to travel.
  • Work within precise limits or standards of accuracy.
