Job Profile
The company is seeking a Surface Shaft Diagnostic Mechanic I who will safely perform diagnostic, maintenance, instillation, and repair of equipment and systems in the underground shaft conveyances, level stations, and hoisting apparatus.
Education Level
- High School Diploma or GED
- Required to pass hoist operator examination – required by the federal government, certified by MSHA
Work Experience
- 2 years of experience in mechanical/maintenance crafts (including welder, boilermaker, machinist, or facility maintenance/construction) or a combination of education and experience in industrial mechanical repair and maintenance.
- Must have completed academic and practical competencies required (this includes Line of Progression requirements for internal employees where LOP Exists) and have experience demonstrating the required mechanical aptitude.

- The selected candidate shall demonstrate the ability to apply knowledge and technical skills while also passing a written assessment where required.
- This exam is based on technical skills/abilities or academic knowledge, as well as safety.
Duties/Responsibilities
- Complete work area inspections and Housekeeping duties.
- May operate equipment such as light-duty vehicles, front-end loaders, track hoes, snow plows, and motor graders.
- May perform avalanche control duties and snow removal activities which could include operating Snow Plows and blowers.
- Perform as a Fill-in Supervisor as needed.
- Perform component diagnostic, replacement, installation, and repairs on, but not limited to: Areas and systems within the shaft which includes: conveyances, all level stations, hoisting systems, and cages. Types of maintenance of the hoisting system could include slick line, rope and liner changes ext.
- Perform mechanical and lubrication preventative maintenance on hoisting systems including monthly hoist systems PM, semi-annual hoist PM, and annual hoist PM.
- Perform shaft and equipment inspections including safety checks on the shaft, rope, clamps, shoes, rollers, and other components.
- Prioritize and make decisions regarding equipment repair as needed.
- Required to act as relief hoist operator.
- Train and mentor other employees.
- Perform other duties as required.
Minimum Requirements
- Ability to read and use schematics and blueprints
- Ability to communicate in English with respect to job assignments, job procedures, and applicable safety standards
- Ability to understand and apply verbal and written work and safety-related instructions and procedures in English
- FPM Diagnostic Mechanic I: The selected candidate shall demonstrate the ability to apply knowledge and technical skills while achieving a 35% score on a written assessment where required. This exam is based on technical skills/abilities or academic knowledge; as well as safety. Must be able to demonstrate proficient basic welding skills.
- Must be able to receive and maintain Explosive Possessor Certification through BATF
- Time management skills

- Personal protective equipment is required when performing work in a mine, outdoor, manufacturing, or plant environment, including hard hat, hearing protection, safety glasses, safety footwear, and as needed, respirator, rubber steel-toe boots, protective clothing, gloves, and any other protective equipment as required
- This is a Safety sensitive role
- While performing duties of this job, the employee is required to stand, sit, demonstrate manual dexterity, climb stairs and ladders, work on elevated platforms, talk, hear, see, and work in confined spaces
