Job Profile

The company is seeking a Switch Heater Electrician who will perform electrical inspection, construction, maintenance, and repair activities on power distribution equipment, floodlight towers, power poles, moveable bridges, generators, turntables, air conditioning units, and other fixed electrical facilities.

This will include Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) and Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) systems.

Employees must be able to meet and comply with the manufacturer’s weight limitation safety rating and recommendations for any equipment associated with performing their duties, including the 300 lbs. safety rating for ladders (both portable and affixed) and fall arrest equipment.

Educational Qualification

  • Possess a High School Diploma or GED
  • 18 years of age or older

Work Experience

  • Possess 1 year of experience reading and interpreting technical drawings or schematics

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master Electrician
  • Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Ensure compliance with all railroad rules and regulations for safety, operations, and the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA)
  • Ensure compliance with National Electrical Code, National Electrical Safety Code, and the Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace (NFPA-70E)
  • Handle testing instruments for measuring voltage, current power, insulation resistance, etc
  • Inspect equipment before each use
  • Install and maintain all classes of exterior/interior wiring for electric, power, and roadway lights, including overhead lines, up to 15kv
  • Install and maintain electrical systems and navigation lights on bridges
  • Install and maintain high and low voltage, overhead and underground wiring and equipment such as switch heaters, control systems, conduits, cables, cross arms, pole-mounted fixtures, transformers and capacitors, outdoor substation apparatus, air systems, fire alarm systems, motors, and generators, year/building power and lighting, heating systems, switchboards and meters, battery charging, systems, welding machines, and UPS systems
  • Interpret and follow electrical codes, manuals, schematic diagrams, blueprints, and other specifications
  • Know the locations of cutouts and switches in areas of service in order to shorten power outages
  • May maneuver fiberglass one-man bucket attached to the boom of line or bucket truck
  • Operate a one-man bucket attached to the boom of the line or bucket truck
  • Remove and replace defective poles and install conduits and conductors, dig by hand or mechanical means, and set poles with the aid of mechanical equipment
  • Understand, troubleshoot, install, maintain, and operate Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) and Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) associated with motor control systems on moveable bridges and turntables
  • Work with power companies and other vendors to plan and complete job activities
  • Miscellaneous activities and responsibilities as assigned by the manager

Physical Requirements

  • Demonstrate auditory and visual acuity/tracking/inspection
  • Distinguish color-coded wiring
  • Heavy work, lifting up to 70 pounds occasionally and up to 100 pounds on a rare basis
  • Stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, crawl, balance, climb

Job Requirements

  • Complete annual training and pass safety rules examinations
  • Federal regulations require random testing for drugs and/or alcohol
  • It may require regional travel
  • Must pass a background screening
  • Must pass a post-offer medical examination, including a drug test
  • Must pass all required assessments
  • This position is governed by a collective bargaining agreement and membership is req.
  • Wear protective equipment such as a hard hat, hearing protection, or safety-toe boots
  • Work hours may include a nonstandard workweek, overtime, and various shift work
  • Work safely to prevent on-the-job accidents and injuries

Other Requirements

  • Ability to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) after 60 days of the start
  • Journeyman Electrician
  • Valid Driver’s License
