Job Profile

The company is looking for a Tool and Die Maker who will select, set up and operate numerous pieces of precision machinery, equipment, and fixtures for the purpose of laying out and preparing fin-die blanks.

Performs die maintenance and repair and performs necessary maintenance of all precision components of the fin presses.

Supports Engineering needs in the design, fabrication, installation, modification, and repair of tooling and fixtures.

Educational Qualification

  • Applicants may be required a High School Diploma
  • A person should have or should qualify for a 5-year state indentured apprenticeship or equivalent

Work Experience

  • Ability to identify different shapes of truing diamonds and the working condition of the diamond.
  • Ability to identify, monitor and compensate for machine expansion changes.
  • Ability to maintain machining tolerances of ±.0002.
  • Ability to program CNC equipment using ‘G’ and ‘M’ code format
  • Ability to read prints and interpret machining requirements.
  • Ability to square up fixturing on a table to .0000 over a length of 36″.
  • Ability to stone and hone a sharp radius on tool steel.
  • Must be able to adjust tooling and equipment to a tolerance of .000 to .0000.
  • Must be able to communicate at all levels from shop floor operator to engineer.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Assist Engineers in estimating the time and materials of jobs.
  • Build, sharpen, and troubleshoot fin dies.
  • Coordinate heat treatment process.
  • Coordinate work between tool maker and die form grinders.
  • Develop and troubleshoot new tooling and make revisions if needed.
  • If required, prepare tool sketches.
  • Inspection of tools, dies, and fixtures that are made by outside vendors.
  • Keep records of all dies.
  • Maintain and overhaul fin presses.
  • Maintain inventory of tools and materials for the operation of the Tool Room.
  • Make tool reports of finished tools.
  • Set up and operate precision tools.
  • Support Maintenance when needed.
  • Work with Engineering to understand tooling concepts, requirements, layout, anticipated problems, and tool build load forecast.

  • Background in mathematics, mechanical drawing, metallurgy, and machine shop practices

Work Conditions

  • Working conditions may vary from a temperature-controlled, isolated environment to areas that are cramped, greasy, and poorly lit.
  • Exposed to sharp edges, high-speed cutting tools, and oil.
  • Standing, reaching, bending, and lifting 0 to 50 lbs. When lifting over 50 lbs., two people are required.
