Job Profile
The company is recruiting a Tool Maker who will produce metal parts and components used in production, as well as finished products for our manufacturing facilities.
Read and analyze blueprints, use engineering principles to compute product dimensions and alignments, program and operate CNC Mill and Lathe Machines, design and fabricate jigs and fixtures, and thoroughly inspect final tools and parts for quality assurance.
Use engineering and machining principles to produce top-notch tools and parts.
Education Level
- High School Diploma or GED or equivalent experience
- Associate’s Degree (preferred)
- Completion of the trade school machining program
Work Experience
- 5+ years of experience performing manual and CNC machine set-up (lathes and mills), operations, and light production
- 5+ years of experience setting up and programming tool-making machines, along with knowledge of cutting tools and basic tool grinding
- 5+ years of experience using tool-making equipment, including knee mills, engine lathes, horizontal and vertical bandsaws, OD and ID grinders, surface grinders, and tool post grinders, among others
- Experience in model making
- Experience in programming CNC equipment (lathes and mills) using G&M codes
- Simultaneous 5-axis mill experience
Duties/Responsibilities
- Able to effectively communicate with other functional departments, such as Engineering, Operations, and Quality.
- Adheres to the ECI 6S program centered around work area safety (organization, standardization, and cleanliness) throughout the shift
- Conduct test runs with completed tools or dies to ensure that parts meet specifications, making adjustments as necessary
- Cut, shape, and trim blanks or blocks to specified lengths or shapes, using vertical and horizontal bandsaws
- Design jigs, fixtures, cutting tools, and templates for use as work aids in the fabrication of tools and parts
- File, grind, shim, and adjust different parts to fit them properly together
- Follow written and verbal work instructions
- Grease, oil, clean, and adjust machines to ensure proper functionality, as needed
- May perform detailed tasks requiring deeper knowledge and experience in the specified processes and procedures
- Must maintain a safe work environment by adhering to all safety procedures, including those that govern the handling of materials, chemicals, tools, and equipment.
- Read blueprints and sketches, acquire dimensions from models, or otherwise obtain specifications to plan sequences of operations for fabricating tools, prototypes, or assemblies
- Responsible and accountable for producing quality work to prescribed standards, with a focus on continuous improvement to meet customer commitments on schedule
- Safely lift, position, and secure work-pieces using hoists or die table
- Set up, program, and operate a variety of CNC machines (lathes and milling machines or grinders) and manual machines to cut, bore, grind, or otherwise shape parts to prescribed dimensions and finishes
- Visually inspect parts, check for defects, and measure using calipers, micrometers, and other measuring tools
- Work under minimal supervision on duties and tasks that are frequently non-routine, adapting procedures, techniques, tools, materials, or equipment to meet special needs
Skills/Knowledge/Abilities
- Ability to identify various materials and grades
- Ability to work well under pressure and multitask
- Knowledge of computer-aided design CAD software and computer-aided manufacturing CAM software
- Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
- Must be detail-oriented with a strong focus on precision and accuracy
- Skill in critical thinking and problem-solving
- Team player with a positive attitude who is willing to work alongside engineers and others
- Wire EDM and Welding (a plus)
Work Environment
- Exposed to noise, heat, and metal dust – safety gear (required)
- Must maintain focus and precision to meet tight tolerances
- Often stands for long periods during detailed metalwork
- Works in workshops or factories with machinery and precision tools
- Works regular shifts, sometimes overtime for urgent jobs
