Job Profile

The company is looking for a Turbomachinery Repair Engineer who will engineer repair solutions and ensure the technical integrity of all work performed in the Repair Shop while following Elliott and the industry standards.

Performs as a technical liaison for the repair shop team, field service, and field sales personnel in performing customer repair projects, shop modernization projects, and general engineering and drafting in support of same.

Ensure that good and sufficient technical oversight, where required, is applied to mechanical repair and modernization work performed within the Houston Service Center.

Education Level

  • Bachelor of Science Engineering (Mechanical, Aerospace), Bachelor of Science Engineering Technology, or equivalent 4-year Degree.

Work Experience

  • 2+ years of experience in shop engineering or related experience including but not limited to fabrication, machining, and creation of industrial drawings.
  • Minimum 7-8 years of total experience with (but at least 5 years working with rotors, compressor and turbine repairs, inspections, and overhaul) Rotary equipment such as Steam Turbines and Centrifugal Compressors.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Ability to work overtime as needed
  • Apply engineering principles in the development of repair recommendations for turbomachinery
  • Assist in customer witness inspections and tests as necessary.
  • Assist the shop floor during the repair execution.
  • Collaborates with other departments to ensure prompt and effective problem-solving of reported service shop troubles for assigned product lines.
  • Compile findings and technical data to prepare Customer Reports (repair recommendations).
  • Create Work Packages detailing Process specifications, Material specifications, and other technical details required for the execution of the project.
  • Dealing with non-conformities in a systematic way established in the QMS. Review and disposition product non-conformances.
  • Ensure the technical integrity of all recommendations of work performed in the Repair Shop and ensure value addition to improve current methods/processes.
  • Ensuring that the Quality Assurance Plans are strictly followed without any deviations while providing engineering support/repair recommendations.
  • Execute service engineering assignments requiring the application of standard techniques, procedures, CAD, and criteria which may involve independent action and decision.
  • Meet and exceed annual objectives.
  • Performs liaison functions with other engineering departments on the specification, manufacturing, assembly, material quality, testing, repair, performance, and operation, of assigned product(s). Includes consulting with field service, service parts, and service repair on field trouble jobs, defective parts, rebuilds, rework, etc., and to rerate group on new parts orders, engineering studies, and design changes.
  • Prepare and approve layout and detail drawings relating to shop problems and service order requests.
  • Prepare the Repair Proposals based on the contract reviews and feasibility study.
  • Prepares and reviews assigned writeups for technical manuals, special process specifications, and work instructions.
  • Provide technical assistance to the shop floor regarding the tooling and machining practices of a particular part.
  • Recommend Safe work practices as per policy, across the plant.
  • Responsible for reverse engineering of non-complex non-Elliot products to achieve the successful completion of component repairs and delivery.
  • Review customer specifications as required and provide comments and exceptions to quality, inspection, and testing-related items.
  • Reviews assigned work scopes for the repair of turbomachinery while ensuring repair recommendation/PO/repair work scope is in line.
  • Set methods and criteria for execution of repair work in the shop in conjunction with the Lead
  • Support reverse engineering team for complex non-Elliott products to achieve the successful completion of component repairs.
  • Support the development and implementation of continuous improvement activities of operations including, but not limited to, establishing best practices, standard work instructions, safety culture and habits, and good housekeeping techniques.
  • Support the Sales Engineers in the quotation phase.
  • Systematic archiving of all engineering Job-related records on time for better traceability and retrieval.
  • Tooling and fixture design and development.

Skills/Knowledge/Abilities

  • Ability to lead teams in problem-solving during repairs and overhauls.

  • Ability to read/interpret technical drawings (metric and standard, first and third angle projection).
  • Ability to understand how designs affect manufacturing.

  • Advance skills with 3D modeling and detailing technical drawings (CREO is strongly desired, but Solid Works, Inventor, and similar will be considered).
  • Advanced knowledge of standard drawing symbols, and tolerances (GD&T).
  • Background with repair methods such as Welding, Coating, Assembly, and Disassembly of all levels and complexity for numerous designs/equipment (blades, impellers, rotors, casings, full units).
  • Basic AutoCAD and FEA abilities/knowledge.
  • Basic exposition with metallurgy, material selection, and heat treatments.
  • Basic knowledge of metallurgy, material selection, and heat treatments.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide quality customer service and support.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability to function as a lead Project Engineer in peak seasons.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability to manage and direct rework/restoration requirements.
  • Developed time management skills, with an ability to balance demand among various projects.
  • Disciplined, and able to follow directions and procedures.
  • Excellent computer skills in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint and able to operate with Elliott Business Systems.
  • Exhibits desire for continuous education and training effort.
  • Fabrication and machining methods.
  • Familiarity with all the most common NDT methods (PT, MT, UT, Zyglo, hardness test, PMI). It does not require to be certified/qualified to perform these inspections (knowledge to be used for engineering purposes only).
  • Familiarity with relevant ISO, ASME, and API codes and regulations.
  • Good understanding and demonstrable exposure to Environment, Health, and Safety practices is essential.
  • Possesses good work habits, promptness, and dependability.

Credible Qualifications

  • Any turbomachinery Field Service Experience will be considered.
  • Basic knowledge of 3D metrology (CMMs, CMM Arms, laser tracker, 3D scanner), will be considered.
  • Familiarity with LBS and ASB processes and methods will be considered.
  • Vibration analysis knowledge/familiarity will be considered.
