Job Profile

The company is hiring a Welder who will engage in welding and related tasks that support the maintenance, repair, and construction of freight and passenger railroad tracks with a safety-first focus.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Adhere to all FEC Safety Policies and Procedures at all times.
  • Direct and instruct equipment operators in safe and efficient work performance, guaranteeing compliance with all rules, regulations, and instructions.
  • Ensures all tools, equipment, materials, and supplies are maintained, used, and stored properly.
  • Prepares and maintains payroll, production reports, accident and injury reports, personnel reports, and all other required records.
  • Responsible for training welder helper(s) to provide safe and efficient relief for the position.
  • Other duties or tasks as assigned by the manager.

Skills/Knowledge/Abilities

  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ability to work a non-standard work week, overtime, and various shift work
  • Be familiar with and understand FRA Track Safety Standards Part 213 Subpart A to G, as published by the Federal Railroad Administration; must have A and B qualifications.
  • Complete annual training and pass safety and track worker rules examinations.
  • Must be capable of operating all FEC Maintenance of Way vehicles in its fleet, both manual and automatic, and must qualify and secure a motor car maintainer permit.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and valid credentials required by federal and state laws, including CDL Class B.
  • Must have at least one year of responsible supervisory experience in track maintenance in Class 4 or higher.
  • Upon employment, new hires must successfully complete and pass all FEC Rules Classes: Safety, Operating, and Roadway Worker. Must complete all requirements to obtain FRA A and B certifications and pass the test within 30 working days.
  • Will be required to operate railway highway motor vehicles.

  • Regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, outside weather conditions, risk of electrical shock, and vibration.
  • Regularly lift or move up to 100 pounds and occasionally lift or move more than 100 pounds.
  • Regularly re­quir­ed to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk, hear or smell.
