Job Profile

The GBW is seeking a Welder/Mechanic/Pipefitter who will take direction from the job Foreman and conduct all aspects of towboat maintenance & repairs from minor dockside repairs to major overhauls.

Candidates need to be able to weld, be mechanically inclined and conduct all kinds of repairs on customer boats.

Must be able to work with others and a team player with good communication skills. Preferred candidates will have an understanding of boat maintenance, systems, and basic vessel operations.

Educational Qualification

  • Possess High School Education or necessary technical skills will be considered in lieu of formal education.

Work Experience

  • The candidates are expected to have some previous work experience.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Ability to fit up structural plate, structure, and pipe
  • Basic housekeeping, cleaning, and painting
  • Basic safety knowledge
  • Basic welding abilities
  • Combination mechanic with technical abilities
  • Entry-level with mechanical skills
  • Work with 2-6 person team

Non-Essential Functions-

  • Work requires some computer proficiency.
  • Competing written expense reports, personal time entry, and benefits administration as needed.
  • Driving or operating fork trucks, man-lifts, or other transportation type equipment.

Skills/Knowledge/Abilities

  • Physical demands may require the ability to endure frequent physical activity, work long days and handle outdoor elements including a variety of weather conditions.
  • Must be able to access all parts of the boat to examine boat design and repair work, including climbing ladders, enter confined spaces and use proper PPE, including harnesses when over 6 feet off the ground.
  • Work easily and skillfully with hands; lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds; have good vision (either naturally or with correction); climb and maintain balance on high ladders and scaffolds; and stand, stoop, kneel, or crouch.

Working Conditions

  • Exposure to a variety of weather conditions on-site can be expected. Job-specific safety training will commonly be required prior to new projects to identify risks and required mitigation steps.
  • Knowledge of shipyard, boat operations, General Basic plus Safety, LOTO, working overhead, confined space entry, and basic electricity safety.
