Job Profile

The company is searching for a Welding Engineer to join its team for product lines.

Educational Qualification

  • Bachelor’s Degree, Master’s Degree, or Ph.D. in engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution
  • A progressive engineering experience is as follows 6 or more years of experience with a bachelor’s degree, 4 or more years of experience with a master’s degree, or 2 or more years with a Ph.D.
  • May substitute equivalent engineering experience in lieu of education.

Work Experience

  • Robotic programming and welding experience (desired)
  • Experience in a Naval shipyard or manufacturing environment (required)
  • Experience with SAP (a plus)
  • Desire a strong understanding of the following weld processes and two (2) of the cutting processes, Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW), Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW), Flux Cored Arc Welding (FCAW), Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), Submerged Arc Welding (SAW), Oxy-Fuel Cutting (OFC), Plasma Arc Cutting (PAC), and Air Arc Carbon Gouging (AAC). Previous hands-on experience and certifications with these welding processes are a plus.
  • Strongly desire a high level of expertise with NAVSEA S9074-AQ-GIB-010-248, NAVSEA S9074-AR-GIB-010 278, NAVSEA T9074-AD-GIB-010-1688, and MIL-STD-1689.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Develops statements of work (SOW) and coordinates with external vendors, such as weld integrators, to establish new capabilities or expand capacity.
  • Develops weld maps, weld sequence maps, and supporting documentation for ensuring high quality and low distortion welds are achieved.
  • Directs the activities of welders, and technicians and may direct the activities of less experienced professional staff.
  • Establish control plans/processes for welding operations.
  • Leads weld qualification activities such as Procedure Qualification Record (PQR), Welding Procedure Specification (WPS), and Welder Performance Qualification Record (WPQR).
  • May represent the organization at internal and external meetings with management.
  • May represent the organization in providing solutions to technical issues associated with specific projects.
  • Perform on-site audits at suppliers to control weld quality on GA hardware as needed.
  • Perform weld process training for General Atomics welders
  • Provides documentation and makes technical presentations as required.
  • Resolve issues and non-conformances related to welding discrepancies.
  • Responsible for making significant contributions towards GA-EMS’s goal of establishing a “best in class” Welding Center of Excellence.
  • Review and approve Supplier weld documentation as needed.
  • Review Design drawings and associated technical documentation for correct weld symbol and welding process, GA Office Work Instructions, procedures, Manufacturing Work Instructions, and Code application requirements.
  • Support estimating/proposal activities with respect to weldments.
  • Supports the operation of engineering systems by evaluating and interpreting needs and problems and develops effective approaches to resolving those issues.
  • Troubleshoots, analyzes, and repairs systems in assigned areas by utilizing standard engineering and scientific principles.
  • With limited direction, this position will function in support of high-level objectives and produce well-structured documented work plans and procedures that ensure business needs are met.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.

Skills/Knowledge/Abilities

  • A Professional Engineering License is desirable.
  • The ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Security Clearance is desired.
  • Able to walk for long periods of time, stoop, squat, climb, and work extended hours and weekends as required.
  • Must be able to travel as required.
  • Must be Windows Operating System software, e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc., proficient.
  • Must have a thorough understanding of engineering concepts, principles, codes, and theory; experience demonstrating a broad application of those concepts; and, expanding knowledge of principles, concepts, theory, and practices in related technical specialties.
  • Must have excellent communication, computer, documentation, presentation, and interpersonal skills, ability to work independently and as part of a team; able to perform complex tasks in one engineering area; and, lead a team of less experienced professional employees on semi-routine tasks.
  • Must possess the ability to understand new concepts quickly; apply them accurately throughout an evolving environment; organize, schedule, and coordinate work phases; and, determine the appropriate approach at the task level or, with assistance, at the project level to provide solutions to a range of complex problems.
