Job Profile

The company is seeking a Welding/Fabrication Director who will manage the region’s team of Welding Specialists.

Provide direct support to the region and the Welding and Fabrication Specialists, and be the subject matter expertise in the area of welding processes, welding quality, welding applications, and the economics of welding and automation.

Education Level

  • Associate Degree Welding (AAS), Military Weld training acceptable or Bachelor’s Degree (Engineering) from a 4-year college or university

Work Experience

  • Must have a minimum of 10 years of experience in the Welding Industry
  • Must be highly proficient with complex/technical sales; 5 years minimum prior sales experience.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Coordinate Airgas automation departmental resources for the region and be familiar with flexible, fixed automation applications and CNC cutting systems.
  • Drive the Airgas advanced fabrication sales methodology and provide support and assistance to Airgas customers.
  • Explain to customers how Airgas can match customer needs with the appropriate products and services.
  • Increase sales and profit margin through efficiency analysis, and engineered cost reduction
  • Make customer sales calls and provide product and application training. Answer customer inquiries and satisfactorily resolve customer complaints.
  • Must be willing and able to travel overnight 40-50%.
  • Operate in a safe manner at all times and be a proactive advocate of safety; promote safety by example with associates and customers.
  • Oversee welding training programs for Region Associates including but not limited to Welding 101, Gases 101
  • Provide information and training concerning Airgas Shielding Gasses including ARCAL, weld products, and services to region sales teams.
  • Serve as a highly proficient technical Airgas Sales Representative with prospects and existing local and national customers.

Supervisory Roles-

  • Oversee selection, training, and development of a team of Regional Weld Specialists
  • Direct the Region Weld Specialist team on the proficient application of Airgas business development tools, achievement of sales goals, and providing effortless customer experience
  • Work closely with Region Area leaders to set business development goals, align the Region Weld Specialist team on the achievement of those goals, and communicate opportunities to improve

Certificates/Licenses

  • ASNT ACCP Level II or III
  • CWE (Certified Welding Educator)
  • CWEng (Certified Welding Engineer)
  • CWI (Certified Welding Inspector)
  • CWS (Certified Welding Supervisor)
  • CWSR (Certified Welding Sales Representative)
  • Membership within organizations such as AWS, ASM, ASNT, ASQ, ASME, and SME (desirable)
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.
  • NCCER Instructor, Core and Welding (National Center for Construction Education and Research)
  • OSHA 10-Hour or OSHA 30-Hour card

Skills/Knowledge/Abilities

  • Ability to be a team player with a positive attitude toward other associates, customers, and the work environment.
  • Ability to be flexible and able to “shift gears” in the face of interrupted schedules, canceled appointments, and unfulfilled promises. Must be proficient with computer applications including but not limited to Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
  • Basic shop equipment used for punching, forming, bending, or rolling both plate and structural components.
  • Basic takeoff and estimating techniques and rudimentary drafting skills.
  • An established track record as a producer could possibly supersede educational requirements.
  • Interpretation of blueprints of at least an intermediate level, including weld symbols.
  • Knowledge of bulk gas facilities and distribution through manifolds, mixers, and piping systems.
  • Knowledge of welding and power equipment from many different suppliers.
  • Manual, semi-automated, and automated welding processes.
  • Must be able to apply mathematical formulas that quantify the costs associated with the processes so analysis and comparisons may be created.
  • Must be self-motivated and results/action-oriented
  • Must have presentation skills and confidence to permit selling to high-level officers of customer companies.
  • Shielding gas applications
  • TQM, Lean, or Six Sigma background. Must have a broad knowledge of the welding, cutting, and fabrication processes common to the Airgas customer base including but not limited to:

Physical Demands 

  • Required extensive traveling and being away from home for several days including some weekends in order to meet deadlines.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Must occasionally lift or move up to 100 pounds.
  • Regularly required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, and talk or hear.

Work Environment

  • Occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions working in temperatures ranging from 20 to over 110 degrees.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
  • Regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and risk of electrical shock.
