Job Profile
The company is looking for a Welding Process Specialist who will be responsible for shortening the sales cycle for Welding and Automation through cost savings engineering (Welding Efficiency Analysis), shielding gas selection for the welding process, weld training, product demonstrations, providing technical information, and automation selection.
Interact with a broad spectrum of Airgas associates, external vendors, and suppliers as well as existing and prospective customers.
Be a Subject Matter Expert (SME) regarding Welding Processes, Welding Applications, and the Economics of Welding.
Education Level
- Associate’s Degree Welding (AAS) from a College/University
- In place of an Associate’s Degree, may accept Military welding training, a Bachelor’s Degree (Engineering) from a 4-year College/University, or additional years of welding experience as a trade-off.
Work Experience
- 3 years of prior technical sales experience
- 7 years of prior welding industry experience
- Instructor Core and Welding, Certified Welding Engineer (CEng), Certified Welding Sales Representative (CWSR), ASNT ACCP Level II or III.
- Membership with the American Welding Society (AWS), American Society for Metals (ASM), American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT), American Society for Quality (ASQ), American Society for Mechanical Engineering (ASME), and SME is highly desirable.
- Requires 2 of the following certifications: Certified Welding Inspector (CWI), Certified Welding Supervisor (CWS), Certified Welding Educator (CWE), National Center for Construction Education & Research (NCCER)
- Requires a 10 or 30-hour Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) training card or certificate.
Duties/Responsibilities
- Completes and turns in sales-related paperwork, including call reports, and month-end reports, and reads and responds to email and phone calls on time.
- Coordinates and participates in the installation and service of robotic, plasma, laser, and fixed automation projects.
- Establishes a process for continuous and accurate market data collection for customer sales and service needs, market trends, and competitor activities.
- Evaluate customers’ welding and cutting processes and provide needed training for improvement to optimize the utilization of Airgas products.
- Initiates customer sales calls and provides customers with product and application training, engineering and technical support, and service for robotics and automation-related needs.
- Maintains and upgrades selling skills and technical/product knowledge through the required training and self-directed research and learning.
- Operates safely at all times and is a proactive advocate of safety; promotes safety by example and aggressively promotes safety with other associates and customers.
- Provides technical knowledge to customers by showing how Airgas can match customer needs with the appropriate products and services. Uses Airgas Sales tools (Efficiency Analysis, Weld surveys, Welding 201) to promote the Airgas Welding Initiative.
- Responsible for growing profitable sales of large capital Welding Processes and Welding Applications to both new and existing local and national Airgas customers.
- Utilizes all necessary sales and marketing literature to promote the Airgas welding initiative.
- Special projects and other duties as required.

- Ability to build effective relationships with all levels and roles both within Airgas and outside the organization.
- Communicates effectively both verbally and in writing; listens effectively and clarifies information as needed; works well with others in a cross-functional team environment across the organization knowing who to engage to achieve results. Uses candor and sensitivity in their dealings with others.
- Demonstrated relationship management and consultative aptitude with the ability to problem-solve and devise technical solutions for the customer.
- Requires visitation to various Airgas and customer sites, which have varying environments/conditions, layouts, and accessibility. The environment may contain loud noises or odors that may last for an extended period or continually.
- Knowledge of the principles of TQM, Lean, or Six Sigma.
- May occasionally be required to move up to 60 lbs. and occasionally may be required to move 60 pounds or more with the aid of material handling equipment.
- Must have a broad knowledge of the welding, cutting, and fabrication processes common to the Airgas customer.
- Requires a current driver’s license, and minimum liability insurance as required by state of vehicle registration.
- Strong mathematical, problem-solving, and analytical skills with the ability to apply to customer sales analysis and cost comparisons.
- Frequent regional travel (up to 50% of work time) requires overnight travel.
