Requirements for AWS SCWI Program

Candidates should possess the following combination of education and work experience.

  • Applicants should have been certified as a certified welding inspector for at least six years out the past eight years.
  • They should possess at least 15 years of work experience in three of the following areas.

AWS B5.1 – Experience Areas (possess any three)-

1. Applicants should have welding related standards, codes, and specifications experiences.

2. They should be welding operators, welders, or tack welders in manufacturing, fabrication, and construction.

3. Having experience in operational techniques and activities such as fulfilling quality control requirements for weldments.

4. Possess experience in planning, control, and application of filler metals and base metals.

5. Having repair welding experience in planning, control, and application

6. They should have teaching experience in welding occupational skills.

7. To have measurement and detection experience of weld discontinuities.

8. Experience related to procedures development, acceptance criteria, inspection requirements, and specification for weldments.

9. Written procedure preparation experience for welding, destructive tests, or nondestructive evaluation of weldments.

10. Candidates should have experience in the qualification of welders or welding procedures.

II. SCWI Exam Pattern

The AWS conducts two open-book examinations for the program. The duration of each part is two hours. There will 200 questions in total.

SCWI Certification Validity

The certificate will be valid for three years unless revoked.

Renewal and Recertification

It will be renewed after a period of three years. Candidates should make sure there is no inactivity for more than two years. The renewal is limited to two terms of three years. After every nine years, applicants need to recertify from the AWS.

Note: There is also a provision for 9 years recertification of SCWI.
