Job Profile

The company is seeking a Structural Fabricator who will handle production fitting operations in the fabrication shop. Components to fit/fabricate include but are not limited to structural parts, deck plates, bulkheads, and foundations using Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), Flux-Cored Arc Welding (FCAW), and Gas Metal Arc Welding Pulse (GMAW-P) processes.

Work Experience

  • Minimum 3 years of shipyard Journeyperson-level experience.
  • Previous experience in the use of overhead cranes.
  • Previous experience in shop equipment, such as an iron worker, a brake press, and a plate roller.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Being skilled in metalworking techniques such as welding, cutting, grinding, and shaping of materials.
  • Fabricate, assemble, and install materials such as beams, channels, angles, and plates.
  • Fabricating and fitting metal components and structures to precise specifications.
  • Must be able to read and derive measurements, dimensions, and quantities of material needed to fabricate the structure.
  • Must be able to work within a team-based environment to accomplish all aspects of fabrication.
  • Reading blueprints, section and plan drawings, and weld symbols.
  • Use in shop equipment such as an iron worker, a break press, and a plate roller.
  • Use of industry tools and equipment, and install, use, and remove stop plates, dogs, strong backs, and pad eyes.
  • Working with a wide range of materials, including steel, stainless, and aluminum.

Skills/Knowledge/Abilities

  • Ability to interpret and understand NAVSEA drawings/blueprints.
  • Good communication and good interpersonal skills.
  • Have working knowledge of Military Standard 1688 and Military Standard 1689.
  • Must be able to fabricate components based on NAVSEA drawing requirements with minimal direction given.
  • Must be able to pass a hands-on welding practical test on SMAW, FCAW, and GMAW-P fillet weld by way of a VT NDT
  • Must be able to pass an oxy-fuel torch test consisting of setting up, cutting, and beveling.
  • Must be able to understand, read, and interpret basic welding symbols based on the requirements of Military Standard 22-D.
  • Must be able to use hand tools and power tools safely and efficiently.
  • Must be able to work weekends and a variety of shifts as needed.
  • Must possess basic reading, writing, and mathematical skills.

  • Exposed to loud noise, dust, and heavy machinery
  • May work long hours, including nights or weekends
  • Often works at heights or in confined spaces
  • Requires wearing safety gear like helmets and gloves
  • Works in workshops, shipyards, or construction sites
