Job Profile
The company is seeking a B Class Aluminum Structural Welder to join its team.
Educational Qualification
- Applicants should have a High School Diploma, GED, or 2 years of maritime experience
Work Experience
- Possess a minimum 6 months of experience as a Trades Assistant at Austal or 1-year related experience in a similar industry (required)
-Completion of an Austal-approved AIDT training course may be accepted in lieu of listed experience or may be required - Must pass the GMAW ‘B’ Class Weld Certification for aluminum applications and approved B Class pre-employment mock weld test
Duties/Responsibilities
- Accountable for the completion of daily work assignments including the completion and signatures for work completion and quality.
- Maintains cleanliness and organization on assigned job sites.
- May be assigned tasks including outside the craft as required.
- May be assigned to work any shift.
- Monitors working environment for compliance with quality, safety, environmental and health regulations.

- Performs grinding and joint preparation that meet the criteria for NDE and all visual inspection processes.
- Understand directions and follow instructions.
- Willing to work with and train lower-skilled workers.
Skills/Knowledge/Abilities
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, divide, and measure using the metric system.
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
- Ability to deal with problems that may arise in certain situations.
- Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
- Ability to write simple correspondence.
- Must be able to demonstrate the safe and effective use of craft-related tools and equipment, including but not limited to millers, sanders, grinders, burr motors, band saws, skill saws, saws all, come along and chain falls, etc.
- Must be able to perform grinding and joint preparation for NDE and all other visual inspection processes.
- Must demonstrate an acceptable proficiency and competency to Austal Supervision for a B Class Welder position.
- Performs the approved WPQTs under limited supervision.
Additional Guidelines
- Must be able to tour all vessels and work sites.
- Regularly required to stand, walk, use hands to manipulate, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, climb and balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, and talk or hear.
- Occasionally required to sit.
Specific Physical Requirements-
- Ability to enter 18” x 36” openings and work in confined spaces for prolonged periods of time.
- Ability to fully extend the arm while reaching overhead, reaching out, reaching to the side, and reaching down.
- Ability to perceive attributes of an object/material such as size, shape, temperature, and texture by means of receptors in the hands and fingers.
- Ability to turn the body at the waist from side to side and about the vertical axis.
- Ability to turn head from side to side and about the vertical axis.
- Ability to utilize personal protective equipment (hard hat, safety glasses, steel-toes shoes, goggles, respirator, safety harness, safety line, flotation gear, etc.) safely per OSHA standards.
- Ability to withstand cold and hot temperatures.
- Ability to work at heights above 12’ while working from ladders, scaffolding, or man lifts.
- Able to respond to verbal and audible sounds/commands. Able to utilize adequate visual skills.
- Able to work at a variety of levels (ex. waist, eye, overhead).
- Demonstrate good balance while working on uneven surfaces and maneuvering obstacles.
- Demonstrate the ability to safely and appropriately use required tools and equipment.
- Lift/push/pull 50 lbs. to 75 lbs. on an occasional basis.
- Lift/push/pull up to 20 lbs. on a frequent basis.
- Must have the ability to bend, squat, stoop, crawl, and kneel.
- Must have the ability to climb in a safe manner (climbing as a minimum includes stairs, scaffolding, ladders, and ramps).
- Perform prolonged standing.
- Possess sufficient handgrip and coordination to carry and operate tools and equipment.
Work Environment
- Regularly exposed to humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, high-precarious places, outside weather conditions, and extreme heat.
- Occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and heat and cold.
- The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud.
