Job Profile

The company (Thompson Turner) is recruiting a Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) who will be responsible for inspection, quality assurance, and quality control.

Work with other technicians and professionals to complete routine field tasks and ensure welds are securely fastened.

Evaluate welds to determine the structural integrity of each project.

Must have significant knowledge of codes and demonstrable experience in a similar position.

Educational Qualification

  • Applicants may be required a High School Diploma or GED
  • Extensive knowledge of industry standards including AWS, ASME, and API (510 and 570)

Work Experience

  • Possess 2 years of experience in weld inspection-related activities (QC, NDT, etc.).

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Analyze x-ray photographs of welded joints.
  • Communicate and deal with customers and other parties in person in such a manner as to benefit professional reputation of Thompson.
  • Compile and submit completed inspection reports in a timely manner.
  • Complete all required training, including tests, within company guidelines.
  • Document all inspections, computations, results, and feedback provided.
  • Educate staff and welders in safety and assembly procedures and requirements.
  • Ensure that work is implemented as required in the project specifications.
  • Examine joints to detect flaws, such as cracks, cold weld, spatter, and undercuts, using a flashlight and magnifying glass.
  • Identify circumstances that necessitate the use of proper safety procedures and equipment.
  • Inspect and test welded joints of work in progress and of completed units for visible defects, correct dimensions, joint strength, bead formation, weld penetration, and conformance with layout, blueprint, and work order specifications, applying knowledge of welding principles and metallurgical properties.
  • Inspect joints for hidden cracks and pits.
  • Inspect weldments to determine if they meet specifications and material standards.
  • Learn and abide by contract policies and procedures.
  • Maintain a strong customer service focus.
  • Mark defective pieces and recommends scrapping or methods for reworking.
  • May weld, test, and inspect metal samples to determine the most effective welding process and technique.
  • Observe techniques and performance of welders in the shop or at the construction site.
  • Pay attention to detail and be capable of recommending and approving repairs as well as performing a visual inspection of completed work.
  • Perform stress tests on joint, using stress testing equipment, or prepares a sample for stress testing, and reviews results.
  • Properly interpret regulations, codes, and industry standards.
  • Study equipment leak regulations applicable to location and customer base.
  • Use a computer to compile and submit daily reports and inspection reports, as well as for inter-office communication.
  • Verify alignment and dimensions of product and setup of machines and fixtures used for work in progress.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Skills/Knowledge/Abilities

  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Must be able to utilize basic math and read a tape measure.
  • Must be able to read, write and communicate clearly with supervisor/co-workers and understand direction from supervisor.
  • The ability to read weld maps is a desirable characteristic for candidates.
  • May be required to pass a drug test and criminal background check based on job location/requirements.

Work Conditions

  • Must be able to lift objects more than 50 pounds, climb, bend, twist, stand and reach repetitively, operate moving equipment, and work in hot, cold, damp, cramped, and noisy environments.
  • Often work from ladders, scaffolding, and lifts from great heights.
