Job Profile

The company is recruiting a CNC Programmer who will develop novel solutions at the cutting edge of space technology.

Work on hardware that will deliver satellites into Earth orbit, ferry humans to and from the International Space Station, and ultimately extend humanity’s reach beyond the Earth and Moon.

Provide input into the design and development of new and existing hardware and take a lead role in creating robust machining processes to create parts for our current and next-generation vehicles.

Education Level

  • High School Diploma or equivalency certificate

Work Experience

  • 1+ years of CNC programming experience
  • 3+ years of CNC programming experience
  • Experience adapting to new technologies, troubleshooting technological problems, using technology to increase productivity, and keeping technical skills up to date
  • Experience assessing strengths/weaknesses, seeking feedback to improve performance, pursuing training/development opportunities, striving to continuously build knowledge/skills, and sharing expertise with others
  • Experience looking for ways to improve/promote quality and demonstrating accuracy/thoroughness
  • Experience programming multi-axis lathes and mills
  • Experience reading a blueprint and understanding all drawing criteria, notes, and GD&T
  • Experience with CNC programming using Esprit CAM software
  • Experience with Okuma OSP controls
  • Experience writing instructions such as safety rules, operating/maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
  • Experience writing routine correspondence
  • Knowledge of basic geometry, algebra, and trigonometry

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Analyze piece parts for DFM to ensure that the parts are optimized for manufacturing and collaborate with engineering to recommend drawing changes as needed
  • Collaborate with other SpaceX machine shop facilities to share capabilities and develop resources to address capacity and scheduling issues as necessary
  • Constantly keep products moving, and alert management when production is inhibited
  • Create tooling and process setup sheets for new part introduction
  • Help develop and utilize a CAM database for efficient new part programming
  • Maintain physical 5S and electronic organization with adherence to the standards of the shop/SpaceX, and develop/enforce standards throughout the shop
  • Review quality concerns from piece part inspection and correct processes accordingly
  • Seek out continuous education opportunities; stay up to date on the latest manufacturing technologies, and spread this knowledge throughout the team
  • Set up, prove out, and operate programs on mill-turn lathes and mills
  • Take feedback from engineering and production to rapidly iterate on part processes and designs
  • Use appropriate CAM tools to program and generate G-Code for DMG, Okuma, Hermle CNC mill-turn lathes and mills

Skills/Knowledge/Abilities

  • Ability to set up, test, and troubleshoot CNC machines
  • Attention to detail and problem-solving ability
  • Excellent math and blueprint reading skills
  • Proficient in CAD/CAM software and G-code programming
  • Strong understanding of machining processes and materials

Work Environment

  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs. unassisted
  • Ability to work with your hands and use tools/controls
  • Must be willing to work in an environment that is close to loud machinery and in a facility that uses coolants, solvents, and cleaners regularly
