Job Profile
The company is looking to hire a Control Room Operator who will be responsible for operating and directing the safe operation of equipment for stopping, starting, or regulating power plant boilers, steam generators, and systems, under the direction of plant management, for maximum efficiency and output
Educational Qualification
- Applicants require a High School Degree or equivalent education
Work Experience
- Possess 3 to 7 years of operating or maintenance experience as a power plant operator or Control Room Operator in a power plant.
Candidates must receive a rating of “Recommended” on the company’s Pre-Employment Skills Assessment.
Duties/Responsibilities
- Assist in the planning and layout of jobs including parts and equipment identification and order needed to complete the job.
- Clean, paint and lubricate equipment
- Conduct and assist OJT instruction of other operators or trainees
- Conduct shift change by fully briefing the incoming Control Room Operator and ensure all PPT- Operator/Mechanics assigned to the plant under the control of the Control Room Operator fully brief their reliefs.
- Coordinate operation and maintenance activities on the unit(s) to minimize the impact on generation; advise plant management when proposed operation or maintenance activities affect the availability of generation.
- Diagnose equipment problems, report abnormal conditions to plant management, and prepare detailed work requests for plant defects.
- Inspect and maintain plant equipment, steam turbines, power boilers, turbine-driven generators, mechanical and electrical auxiliaries, fuel systems, lubricating systems, and water recirculation and treatment systems; coordinate the activities of PPTs assigned to support the equipment being operated.
- Inspect plant and equipment and prepare defect reports; ensure maintenance requests are completed to a satisfactory standard; ensure the plant work requests are properly submitted through the work management system; assist in planning, organizing, and executing unit outages for inspections, overhauls, repairs, and cleaning.
- be a member of the plant’s fire brigade or acts as plant fire guide for outside fire departments
- Maintain housekeeping standards in all areas of the plant as assigned
- Make daily checks to ensure the safety and cleanliness of the plant are maintained to a high standard, and ensure PPT-Operator/Mechanics carry out scheduled operational checks.
- Monitor and, as necessary, perform routine chemical analysis of plant water to determine the chemical constituents and take corrective action to maintain plant quality within prescribed limits as required.
- Monitor equipment conditions using all indications available in the control room, on-site, and portable test equipment.
- Operate unit(s) and associated plant equipment, within limits, for maximum efficiency and output while maintaining environmental compliance and safety.
- Participate in ongoing training to maintain and enhance the skills required to perform all Control Room and PPT-Operator/Mechanic duties and assist in the training of others.
- Perform all activities in accordance with applicable health, safety, and environmental standards;
- Perform disconnect switching and electrical and maintenance operations to place equipment in and out of service.
- Perform maintenance activities as required in support of the overall maintenance of the plant.
- Prepare and maintain quality assurance procedures and technical instructions and actively support and participate in the use and continuous development of the quality management system.
- Prepare work orders and input data into work history. (SAP)
- Prepare work permits and administer the LOTO (Lockout, Tagout) system as it applies to the equipment for which the Control Room Operator is responsible.
- Prepare, maintain, and administer procedures and reports related to the operation, monitoring, and maintenance of the plant; maintain accurate logs of daily operations, check sheets, change charts, and ink recorders.
- Read, interpret, and implement technical information found in manufacturers’ and OEM technical manuals, electrical and mechanical P&IDs, and operating and maintenance procedures.
- Utilize computer and other technology-based work management systems as may be required in performing work duties.
- Will be required to coordinate the work of others
- Respond to overtime requests as needed, handle special assignments, and perform related work as required
- Assist other classifications as may be required.
Skills/Knowledge/Abilities
- Basic computer knowledge
- Complete an electrical power plant operating training program and possess or be prepared to obtain certification
- Must have knowledge of job safety requirements, strong verbal and written communications skills, interpersonal skills, and possess a demonstrated ability to learn.
Work Conditions
- Exposed to both indoor and outdoor environmental conditions, cold and hot temperatures, and moderate to high noise levels.
- Requires a person to occasionally bend, stoop, reach, push, pull, walk, sit, stand and climb.
- This is a 24-hour, 7-day work environment, so the position may require overtime and may work a variety of shifts.
