Job Profile

The company is hiring a Fuel Cell Research Technologist who will be responsible for the fuel cell system engineering and technical direction for future Ford zero-emission fuel cell electric vehicles.

Be responsible for the maintenance, calibration, facility interface, and high percentage uptime operation of fuel cell test stands used for research at the cell and stack levels.

Educational Qualification

  • Applicants should have a High School Diploma or GED

Work Experience

  • Possess 2 years of experience in hands-on mechanical assembly and integration of components and systems.
  • 1 year of experience in capturing test data or tracking other criteria using spreadsheets such as Excel-based tables.
  • 1 year of experience in the operation of test equipment following standard operating procedures.
  • 2 years of experience interpreting and using mechanical drawings.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Apply mechanical and electrical troubleshooting skills to maintain fuel cell test stands. This will often require knowledge of thermocouples, pressure transducers, backpressure regulators, flow controllers, sump pumps, tubing, fittings, temperature controllers, load banks, power supplies, electrical and computer network interfaces, test stand software, and other instrumentation required for controlling fluid flows, humidification, voltage, and current.
  • Document standard operating procedures at the room and equipment levels.
  • Interface with facility engineers and trades personnel to maintain consistent delivery of reactant gases, chilled water for heat exchange, electricity, deionized water, and nitrogen. Alarms, safety systems, drains, vents, and in some cases, room environments, must also be maintained in proper condition to allow for safe and robust operations.
  • Maintain inventory of test article and test stand equipment and maintain the supply of specialty gases used for cell diagnostics.
  • Perform upgrades of test stands as new methods or advanced computing hardware or software becomes available.
  • Provide minor mechanical builds as needed to enable advanced test article instrumentation or effluent analyses.
  • Troubleshoot diagnostic equipment (e.g., potentiostats) or arrange for troubleshooting with suppliers.
  • Understand calibration needs to maintain consistent and reliable delivery of test conditions and resulting data.
  • Refresh computers as required for test stands and diagnostic equipment.

Skills/Knowledge/Abilities

  • Ability to work in a diverse team environment.

Preferred Abilities-

  • Ability to understand electrical schematics and experience in electrical wiring.
  • Ability to weld aluminum, stainless steel, and other materials.
  • Experience assembling layered test articles involving gaskets, seals, and alignment features.
  • Experience in machine shop fabrication of components for system builds, test stand repairs and test stand modifications.
  • Experience working with fuel cell components.
