Job Profile
The company is seeking a Grinding Process Engineer who will be responsible for the development and improvement of grinding processes required for the manufacture of turbine blades defined by customer drawings, models, and specifications.
Determine the most efficient machining process, by utilizing lean concepts and continuous improvement methods, to manufacture high-quality products.
Specifies and develops operational sequence, manufacturing methods, details, tooling, and all items needed to achieve manufacturing goals according to product specifications.
Work hands-on, interacting with shop floor personnel and process specialists, to ensure lean plans are created and implemented.
As the process owner, work with various teams to assure all requirements are met and are up to standards to support our goals of quality, cost, and delivery.
The position will report to the Director of Engineering.
Educational Qualification
Applicants should have an education or education + experience requirements-
- High School Diploma or Equivalent with 10+ years of manufacturing experience
- Bachelor’s Degree in Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field
- Associate’s Degree in Manufacturing Engineering or related field with 5+ years of manufacturing experience
Work Experience
- Possess 5+ years of turbine blade grinding and inspection experience
Duties/Responsibilities
- Adhere to AS9100, Nadcap, and other quality standards
- Assist cell leader and/or process specialist in troubleshooting production floor issues
- Assist in developing and approval of Special Handling instructions when product needs rework
- Assist the QE in the development of inspection process instructions and provide input for the proper inspection equipment, methods, and frequency
- Assist in training new or existing team members
- Attend customer meetings (kick-off, coordination review, and close-out)
- Communicate directly with Customers on engineering-specific issues or new part development when guided and approved by the Director of Engineering
- Develop, prepare, and maintain process routings and operation instructions based on all internal and customer requirements
- Evaluate turbine blade grinding applications and determine the machines, inspection equipment, and methods required for the manufacture
- Identify and implement manufacturing processes improvements in order to increase efficiency, and product quality, and reduce costs
- Identify and understand all customer requirements from Purchase Orders (PO), blueprints, specifications, or other customer-supplied information
- Implement and ensure solutions achieve required quality levels, reliability, and consistency in a cost-effective manner
- Lead the process engineering team focused on the development and improvement of grinding and inspection processes associated with the manufacture of turbine blades
- Provide support for root cause analysis and change implementation using tools such as FMEA, DMAIC, PDCA, 5 WHY
- Provide technical support and communicate with shop floor personnel effectively on a daily basis
- Quote work based on requirements including small lot fees and expedite charges with guidance from the Director of Engineering
- Request all required tooling, gaging, electrodes, programs, plated grinding wheels, diamond rolls, airflow molds, etc. to initiate processing
- Review jobs to ensure profitability and on-time delivery
- Review Purchase Order requirements using the internal system and manage the flow-down of technical information
- Perform miscellaneous duties and projects as assigned
Skills/Knowledge/Abilities
- Ability to multi-task and prioritize multiple projects
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and an understanding of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)
- Excellent speaking, listening, comprehension, and written communication skills in English
- Familiarity with CAD software (NX, AutoCAD, or similar)
- Intermediate ability to process and communicate information using Microsoft Office products
- Intermediate knowledge of lean manufacturing principles
- Must be able to use standard gauges (micrometers, height gauges, calipers, )
- Must be organized and committed to meeting deadlines
- Six Sigma Green Belt or similar training
- Sound analytical and problem-solving skills
- Strong interpersonal and leadership skills
- Work without direct supervision
- Understanding of quality systems such as AS9100, ISO, and NADCAP
- Must meet ITAR definition of a US Person (documentation required)
Work Environment
- Must be able to work in a supportive team environment that is fast-paced with a strong commitment to accountability.
- Regularly required to stand, use hands, reach with hands and arms, move throughout the facility, and communicate.
- Work in an office environment and use of a computer (typical 2-button scroll mouse and keyboard – 75% of the work day).
- Must frequently lift/or move up to 35 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
- The noise level in the work environment may be loud.
- Must be able to use required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
