Job Profile
The company is hiring a Welding Technician (Materials Engineering) who will perform a variety of assignments. These may include the performance of laboratory tests, welder training, and weld procedure tests.
Update materials department databases and work with other departments relative to the application of materials and processes.
Support R&D, manufacturing, and service.
Education Level
- Associate Degree in welding or engineering OR at least 3 years of experience in welding or materials testing

- Possess work-related experience
Duties/Responsibilities
- Assists in welder training and testing.
- Assists other departments, primarily Manufacturing, in the execution of various processes such as welding and heat treatment.
- Conducts heat treatments using laboratory equipment.
- Coordinates chemical analyses on metallic and non-metallic materials.
- Initiates new ideas for improvement of products, costs, applications, sales, or services.
- Maintain a safe laboratory environment. Organizes, cleans, and maintains lab and equipment.
- Maintains adequate supply of consumable items related to area activity preparing requisitions when needed.
- Participates actively in company-wide quality improvement process.
- Performs tests to determine mechanical properties including hardness, tensile, impact, stress rupture, fatigue, and bend tests
- Performs a variety of other types of tests on metallic and non-metallic materials to evaluate the suitability of material or process for the intended application and evaluates results.
- Prepares documents such as test reports as needed by other departments, vendors, or customers.
- Prepares non-destructive tests. May coordinate this activity.
- Prepares specimens for metallographic examination and makes photomicrographs of selected areas. In some cases, will perform a complete examination with review by the supervisor.
- Prepares test samples by cutting, mounting, drilling, grinding, polishing, etc.
- Prepares weld qualification test plates, does the welding, and prepares section for evaluation as may be required.
- Records all test results and observations in an orderly manner, bringing results to the attention of the supervisor when specification requirements are not met.
- Stays abreast of developments in areas of activity.
Skills/Knowledge/Abilities
- Must be capable of operating laboratory equipment and selecting the proper testing procedure.
- Must be capable of using electronic databases and programs such as Microsoft Office.
- Must be familiar with Non-Destructive Evaluation techniques and types of material defects.
- Must have a basic understanding of industry codes and standards
- Must have a basic understanding of materials testing processes and metallurgical evaluations.
- Must have basic knowledge of welding processes and be a qualified welder.
- Must have good communication skills and work in a team environment.
