Job Profile

The company is looking to hire a Pipefitter Supervisor to join its team for the Pipe Shop.

Educational Qualification

  • Applicants should have a High School Diploma or GED
  • Apprenticeship Diploma, Additional Vocational Courses, Technical School Graduate, or Military/Civilian Experience with marine piping systems in a repair department or shipyard

Work Experience

  • Possess 1 to 3 years of experience working under a senior Pipefitter

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Analyze and resolve day-to-day issues including personnel conflicts, safety concerns, quality issues, and material constraints
  • Assess areas of concern prior to assigning personnel to a task and review the concerns with the personnel to implement a strategy to ensure compliance with all technical and safety requirements
  • Assist in determining project physical progress and project cost projections
  • Assure organizational compliance with all safety, quality, and environmental, state, local, and federal regulations.
  • Become familiar with all work-related documents such as drawings, manuals, and bid specifications. Question requirements that are not clear or appear to be in conflict
  • Document completion and control, including Progress Sheets, discipline, timesheets, charge numbers
  • Ensure that all work done on the vessel and in-house is completed on time, on budget, and to the contract quality standards/keep track of budgets and spending for their assigned jobs
  • Evaluate the necessity and progress of subcontractors and temporary employees
  • Exhibit an understanding of the quality requirements of the project they are assigned to and constantly monitor their assigned area for compliance with the established quality standards
  • Identify and address all issues that may affect the successful completion of assigned projects
  • Identify and document any potential growth work, not only growth that is needed to complete the job assigned, but also in areas of the ship where there is no agreed work currently
  • Identify improvements that can be made in yard work processes
  • Inform staff of expectations and provide clear and consistent direction/hold the employees accountable for the established goals and check their progress toward those goals on a frequent basis
  • Keep track of and minimize material costs, including, rentals, storeroom issues, subcontractors, and job materials
  • Maintain the right mix of skilled and semi-skilled employees working to keep the dollar cost as low as possible
  • Maintain the vessel, shops, and surrounding areas in a clean and safe condition
  • Manage, supervise, and direct the day-to-day efforts of department tradesmen assigned to the project
  • Manpower scheduling and maintenance, including controlling overtime hours
  • Multitask in a very fast-paced and versatile atmosphere; handle stressful situations, as well as demanding customers
  • Promote and confirm that all employees and subcontractors are in compliance with the safety requirements, including the necessary use of PPE
  • Provide ample notice of manpower needs and changes to the Resource Manager
  • Provide input to the Superintendent concerning job/material costs, manpower hours, and all other issues that may affect contract negotiations
  • Provide training to new employees covering shop equipment and procedures
  • Report and initiate discipline for safety or policy infractions in accordance with company policy
  • Responsible for assigning daily tasks to trade personnel assigned to him by the foreman
  • Review, understand, and implement daily plans to maintain the production schedule while minimizing the impact on the budget
  • Train and supervise the department’s workforce
  • Work independently to complete responsibilities/must have regular, reliable attendance
  • Other duties may be assigned as workload requirements dictate.

Skills/Knowledge/Abilities

  • Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc.
  • Ability to understand and perform the basic setup, alignment, and operation of various portable tools and hand tools used in the trade
  • Expert knowledge of and ability to use hand tools and instruments associated with the trade
  • Has basic knowledge and understanding of shipboard piping systems (repair/installation practices, procedures, pipe bending, alignments, and troubleshooting) and blueprint reading
  • High level of critical thinking/reading
  • Knowledge of and ability to use hand tools and instruments associated with the trade
  • Must be a steady, reliable worker
  • Must be able to work effectively with others
  • Must be self-motivated and able to complete responsibilities with minimal direction
  • Technical training (preferred)
