Job Profile

The company is looking to hire an R&D Welding Technician who will evaluate new tubular and stick electrode arc welding consumables, evaluate reformulations of existing products, and help troubleshoot issues as necessary.

Educational Qualification

  • Applicants require a High School Diploma or Equivalent

Work Experience

  • Graduates of the 9-month welding program at HIWT or equivalent vocational training program preferred or extended form of in-house apprenticeship.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Perform welding evaluations and provide feedback (verbal or written) to the product formulation engineer. Evaluations consist of-
  • Weld test formulas using a bead-on-flat plate, and fillet welds in all positions.
  • Welding chemical analysis test pads (chempads)
  • Welding standard multi-pass groove weld test plates in all positions
  • Must be able to articulate what they see while welding and express how different products perform in a clear, meaningful fashion
  • At a minimum, must be capable of welding in all positions with FCAW and SMAW processes
  • Must be willing and able to develop expertise with all arc welding processes (SMAW, GMAW, MCAW, FCAW, and SAW), and with all ‘families’ of products in the Hobart Brothers portfolio.
  • Must be familiar with common welding codes (AWS, ASME, and standard industry practices (welding techniques, welding procedure specifications, pre- and post-heating requirements, etc.)
  • Must be adaptable, and able to weld by following welding procedure requirements.
  • Must learn to perform other test methods and procedures.
  • Those methods include- robotic welding systems, fume generation tests, deposition rate tests, hardness testing, hot- and cold-cracking tests, and diffusible hydrogen testing.

Skills/Knowledge/Abilities

  • Basic skills in Microsoft Office Suite Programs (Teams, Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • Excellent time management and prioritization skills.
  • Lift up to 50 lbs. repeatedly and work on your feet 6+ hours per day
  • Maintain a safe, clean, well-organized workspace and perform housekeeping duties as necessary.
  • Must be a team player.
  • Prepare base metal using industrial bandsaws, and belt/angle grinders as needed.
  • Safety conscience and willing to be part of a proactive safety and improvement culture.
  • Willing to cross-train and assist as needed in Lab Service Areas (Bandsaw, Chemistry Lab, Machine Shop, and Mechanical Testing Lab)
  • Work safely with oxy-fuel heating and cutting torches.
