Job Profile

The company is hiring a Senior Mechanical Engineer who will provide Mechanical Engineering support and leadership to the secondary lining team.

The candidates will have the ability to work independently and work with other engineering disciplines to develop mechanical engineering solutions into detailed schemes supported by drawings, methodologies, calculations, and reports to demonstrate compliance with all technical, safety, and quality requirements.

Educational Qualification

• The applicants should have a minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related subject is preferred
• Meet the requirements of UK-SPEC at the Incorporated Engineer or Chartered Engineer Level

Work Experience

• The candidates should have experience related to areas including hydraulic systems, pressurised pipework, instrumentation and control, electronics and electrical systems, static and fluid design, and testing and commissioning will be of value in this role

Duties/Responsibilities

• Check the work of other Senior Mechanical Engineers and Mechanical Engineers who work for you
• Ensure welding quality standards are adhered to across the project
• Generate design concepts and solutions to meet project requirements, including the preparation of Temporary Works Design Briefs (TWDBs). Prepare and present these TWDBs and engineering detail for internal review. Liaise with designers as required (e.g. for FEA analysis and specialist calculations
• Implement a planned preventative maintenance scheme and oversee the spare parts management
• Mechanical Authorising Engineer ensuring compliance with the Mechanical Safety Rules
• Prepare, check, and approve that drawings are correct to required standards, that they reflect design intent correctly, and that they adequately define parts for manufacture and assembly
• Produce scoping documents/specifications and sanction purchase of specialised tunnelling equipment and machinery, ensuring ‘fit-for-purpose’
• Support the Plant Manager and Tunnel Manager with other tasks and activities as required
• Working alongside the Mechanical and Electrical Superintendents effectively manage labour requirements/manpower planning, production planning, instrumentation calibration, plant modifications, and develop innovative systems and processes utilising all available technology
• Working alongside the Mechanical and Electrical Superintendents to ensure the key roles are staffed with people who can effectively undertake their roles on the project

Skills/Knowledge/Abilities

• Capacity to manage change, identify problems, their causes, and practical solutions
• Able to demonstrate a proven track record of production management, with a strong technical ability for applying their underpinning knowledge and experience to solving problems including new technologies and innovations for complex engineering systems
• Ensure compliance with project policies, procedures, and standards regarding finance, health and safety, quality, and human resources
• Ensure the equipment and machinery availability and overall utilisation targets are met
• Must have strong interpersonal skills in communicating technical matters, able to speak with employees, managers of different disciplines and senior management
• Competence in the use of CAD tools to prepare design models and detailed drawings is required
• Proactively engage with equipment and parts suppliers to ensure that their expertise contributes to the effective operation of production equipment and resolution of problems
• Readiness to evaluate alternatives and make decisions even when all the information required is not available
